Are they really needed when building? I've built computers before without them but part of me is saying to get one. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance guys

I spent 25+ years dealing with electrically initiated sqibs/carts (susceptible to initiation through static) and IMO anti-static mats aren't necessary outside of a production environment. Main thing is to be smart and always ground yourself to the case before handling any discrete components, avoid doing things on your shag carpet, and reground yourself after moving (don't cross the room to pick up your shiny new vid card and then install it without grounding yourself to the case).

The bag your Motherboard come in or vid card.

Use a box the board comes in or a cereal box.
