ARK: Survival Evolved

My brother-in-law and I picked it up yesterday and I set up a server. Pretty neat so far... and hard! Blasted sabertooths! :haha: Neat game.

Question about longevity for those who have been playing longer:

I have read some pretty negative comments about the PvP and I can't really play often enough to handle a mechanic where my character stays in game to be pilfered while I am offline. I can have days at a time where I don't get gaming time. RL demands etc. So official PvP servers are likely not an option for me. Running on a dedicated server is a great option, kind of like the way a group of us used to play Minecraft, but with Minecraft you could always explore and you could always build something new. With Ark once you get established (which will take some time given how many times I was a dino snack last night!) is there much to do or any feeling of urgency in the later game if other players are not there to attack you? I'm assuming all the dinos don't band together to take out your base... although that might be neat! :thumb:

I'm in the exact same situation as you regarding game time. Might get an hour a night if I'm lucky.
I don't even bother trying to play on the official servers. There are likely some PVE ones out there where you could play just fine, but right now I have a single player game going and also a private server that I play on with the kids.

I was playing hardcore on my single player game but got sick of dying all the time right as I started to learn all the cool stuff so I switched to regular. I'm only just now (after 3 weeks or so) starting to get all the fun items (saddles for dino's that don't suck, guns etc) and I haven't even begun to do any of the more interesting activities such as building rafts, exploring caves, summoning the mini bosses etc. Since I only just got the pternadon saddle I've also only explored maybe 5% of the map.

Plus there's the Survival of the Fittest mod (think Hunger Games) that I haven't even tried yet but looks like lots of fun. Game is open to the modding community too, and the devs have even taken some of the modded stuff and incorporated it into the base game. I'm sure before long there will be a ton of new maps out there.

South 2 is a nice safe place to get setup if you're getting sick of being dino fodder. There are a few dilos but you have to go out of your way to find anything more dangerous than them. Oh, and pirahnas. Bastards. They're easy enough to take out if you pay attention and don't go blindly diving into water without checking it first though.

How are you running your private server? Are you running a dedicated one with the standalone exe or just launching something from in the client? I ran the server standalone exe (thought I had to at first) and that was fine for last night, it does save the server state, but that was on my main Windows PC and I don't want to leave that up all the time. I have an older PC that I used to run a Linux Minecraft server on and still use for Mumble but based on the rec specs I am reading online for a dedicated server I think that PC might not be up to the challenge. I won't have a tonne of players, less that 10 I would guess, but things I have read still recommend 4-6GB of RAM for the server, it using almost 3 without anyone logged in!

The open modding approach the dev have described is very cool! I just started reading about that. That is a pretty big deal for community involvement and extending the game. Should make for lots of future options.

PS. Playing with the kids, excellent! My daughter is still a bit young but she sure would love the dinos!

I'm not actually running the server myself - daughter-in-law is running it on her machine so I have no idea how it's set up sorry.

Some settings I would recommend adjusting though:
Dino taming speed 6x. Don't know about you, but I have better things to do than babysit a triceratops for 2 hours while it tames.
XP gain 2x. Move things along a bit quicker.
For solo games I also double the resource gather rate.
 
I've had a server from the start with offline protection. I even make event areas like my Siege Arena Here.

Those settings, are they server side do you know? Started looking into server commands but haven't figured them all out yet. 2 hrs of babysitting :haha: yeah, that likely isn't going to work too well with my play schedule either!

Offline protection means when you log out people can't loot or attack you? That would be a nice feature.
 
Well on my public server I set the offline protection to start from 12 midnight to 9pm the next day. Meaning structures can't be damaged during this period. Raiding hours are from 9pm to 12 midnight EST. U can only be raiding once a week, and the raiders can only raid u on 3 days out of the week that u have picked. I use a flag system. I believe in fair play.

The server info is posted HERE, however in 2 days I will be posting the updated server info.

Also, the halloween event is pretty sweet. Made a character to play on the official servers and have been hitting up beacons in the hopes of finding some game codes so I can give them out.
No luck so far though...keep dying to stupid pirahnas. Tame time on official servers sucks - couldn't even get a dilo tamed as I kept running out of meat for it :/
