Hello all this project took a presidential order to finally become viable and semi justifiable lol but its happening here is the build list more to come once parts start arriving.
i know this is rather insane for a Nas like why does anyone need 18 Cores / 36 Threads well lemme give ya a insight to my madness lol.

i can turn off individual cores so i will only be running enough to keep the system snappy and enough for the VM ill be using to be the main source of getting the data (torrent) right now the the setup im using is or was maybe never meant to do this kinda work the lag is unreal when using the vm. plus i can OC the Cores as needed down the road if i feel it needs more speed.
its delidded i have a direct die frame the cooler is an absolute Beast.

this should handle the plex duties (just me remoting in while on nights) and host the apps to back up wifes phone/pc my phone/rigs as needed and ill turn the Synolgy into a Rsync server so this new rig will hold the main data and the synolgy will only need to backup up incremental changes as things get added plus it may host the apps i cant get running properly on the Truenas Rig.

1. WS X299 Sage
2. intel i9-7980XE (Delidded)
3. Corsair Vengeance 3600mhz 128gb (iceman Heatspreader)
4. 12x 28th Seagate Exos
5. Nvidia P2000 5gb (plex)
6. Jonsbo N5 (Nas Case)
7. MSi MAG 1250GL
8. Scythe Ninja
9. ICE-DG-X299 Cpu Delid Die Guard
10. intel Optane DC P4800X x2 375gb (Zlog/Metadata Cache)
11. Truenase Scale
12. LSI 9300-16i + 4 sets Mini SAS SFF-8643 Host to 4 SATA (Flashed IT Mode)

only thing im not solid on is the proper Raid Card to use as some have extra power inputs. i dont mind if its a card with IT Mode. ill have enough redundancy in ZFS to protect the data and enough other ssds/optane to maintain write integrity

I would advise CMR drives over SMR for NAS.
oh yeah most definitely i looked on seagates site the 30TB+ seem to be SMR so 28TB will be the ones ill end up going with and im thinking of a 4x4 pcie card for 4x2tb nvme ssds to cache the hdds and ill most likely turn most of the available ram into a ramcache as well. i know ill lose 1 drive right off the bat to parity then a few more to how many spares i want since ill be using ZFS.

Did some IT mode research just in case:
LSI 9300-16i = pcie 3.0, supports trim/ssds, full IT mode. Around $100 on ebay, so same price as the raid cards I typically use and dont have BBUs, but they've been confirmed to work with Unraid and the like.

Adaptec has a few options too, but they seem pricier and some claim they run HOT.

Honestly Ive always liked LSI stuff though, so I'm pretty biased. You could go for an El cheapo card from a no-name that happens to be on the supported list, but then you may run in the driver issues, stability probs, poor build quality, etc. This is one of those area where Kllnever take the cheap route, personally. Tis up to you though!

EDIT: Important! And LSI 9300-16i that isnt already flashed to IT will need yoy to do it yourself (command -line stuff). Flip side, it seems some adaptec cards can simply be toggled to IT mode in the pre-OS firmware menus of those cards (again, I dont have one of those though, so can't confirm firsthand).

Yes, you need PCIe 6-pin power and this firmware update:

Might need to find the "migrated" forum post with the actual firmware zip.

I also have a copy if you trust me, I can upload it somewhere.

Ty was gonna ask incase I get a defective cable. Can't wait to start building I built a True Nas box for wifey so she has her own private cloud in the N3 only 24TB but more then enough for her needs.
