OK guys, for those of you who actually tried to help, thanks!!! The whole PC upgrade would have been a waste of money, thanks for saving me a few hundred dollars!!! Just adding the SSD to his computer was a very big improvement. I guess I will add some RAM somewhere down the road, no complaints from him but he has not played with any photos yet. And talk about quiet now, which I expected, the old HD was super loud. The RAM is almost all used just from win10, something like 3.7GB/4GB, so I suspect some will be needed to do anything that uses significant RAM.

I went with an old version of WIN10 I had on a 4GB stick, now you need a 8GB stick to even start the download. That worked fine for some reason, even after it updated to the same version as I was having troubles with.

For what your dad is doing his present configuration is enough. Just upgrade the RAM and throw in a SSD and that PC will fly. No need for an overhaul. I am running an i3 and doing video capturing and editing and is just fine.

Video capturing done with the native software of the capture card (Elgato) editing with Avidemux and recompression with Handbrake.
