discussion File Server CPU upgrade? (Core 2 Duo --> ??)

Grabbed a e8400, Asus P5K-VM and 4GB RAM from a old work machine. Should be a good upgrade for the server!

Now I gotta test out XBMC on the older server to see if I can use it as a HTPCunk:

I tried XMBC a couple years ago and ended up going with MediaPortal. I have thought about trying XMBC again but so far I really like mediaportal and it does all the same things. Like the others I highly recommend just using one small ideally ssd (quieter) in the htpc and then grab everything from your server. As for space just grab a couple 4TB reds and replace your 1TB ones.

You could setup a VM for 'other tasks: downloads and tries to unrar...stuttt tt tttee eeerrrrrr. ' and set the CPU utilization to 50% to 'x' cores to handle/reserve requests better? i use bridged lan Virtualbox or VM player in the background in my media server to handle file tasks.
