yes, it is Linux based, but as the article points out, the kernel it uses has been so modified from the standard it's 'unrecognizable'.

This is a nice step if they can get it to work. Will make LTS and backporting bug fixes infinitely easier. Not sure if that will translate into better support for old devices or not -- Likely not because the carriers and manufacturers have their grubby mitts in it.

The only strange thing is why? I thought they were replacing everything with Fuchsia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Fuchsia
