IPTV services in Canada?

Perhaps related? I've seen some newer TVs offer native (and presumably legal) IPTV channels, as soon as you connect it to the internet. My example is a newish LG one, but I think some others might have the same offerings. If you ask, I can check out the channels to see what they offer? Didn't look into it myself.

Usually better off just swapping between providers every 2 years to get the promotional rates.

Unfortunately, around here, Rogers kind of "has us by the short & curlies", because although Telus offers service, they don't have their fibre in our area(or rather, their fibre line ends JUST down the street), and we'd have to take a speed hit(IIRC, they max. out at 50Mbps in this neighbourhood) to use them. (n)

What's Rogers offering you though? New customers and even retentions are usually around $120 for Internet+TV bundles, that's usually the 1.5Gbps Internet and Popular TV package with 1 box.

Hell, if they were offering that, I'd be all over it..... our 2yr. "value" plan is soon expiring, and the best they're offering is $174 for 500Mbps with the "Popular" TV, with our current 1 box + 1 portal, and the rep apologized, saying, "that's the best I can do, since the offers are designed by the organization".

That's pretty garbage, I suppose the RFD thread is heavily weighted towards Ontario customers. I'm at $120 for 1.5Gbps & Ultimate TV (+$10 theme pack, +$17 extra box, so $137+tax).

Maybe try being a bit more pushy or set a cancellation date? I would still check in to what Telus is offering as comparison, even if the Internet is 10x slower, it may still be fine depending on the size of your household and what you do.

So it seems you must have TekSavvy as your ISP to even get their IPTV, as Cannon was thinking. Not many good options, it seems.

Yeah, I'm generally not into "being a bit more pushy", but it seems like I may have to be...... later on I'm going to turn on our VPN, and see what pops up on the Rogers site when it thinks I'm in Ontario, and if I see some serious discrepancies, I'll DEFINITELY be gettin' irritated and/or pushy.

Yeah, I'll have a closer look, and maybe the threat of leaving for "the other guys" will all of a sudden turn up a better offer from Rogers.....

Oh, and I would've left for a 3rd party provider a long time ago, but the wife is so attached to her Shaw email address ...... that, and if something goes sideways with our connection, then you have to contact the provider, who then contacts Rogers, and then they PROBABLY take their sweet time about coming out to address the issue..... maybe someone here, that's using a 3rd party provider, can elaborate on how that works???

Incognito is usually enough. But to make your life easier they advertise Popular TV + 500Mbps for $155 ($197 regular) for my neighbours address (Toronto). So it's actually $5 more than what I see on the Shaw/Rogers site when I pick BC. And the website deals are never the lowest price.

The better deals are typically found via sales reps. Sometimes you'll find them at Costco or other smaller grocery stores, or any sort of trade show. A few hang around RFD.

Lots of people claim this, so can't really say either way. My Bell fiber line detached from the pole (but still worked) while being with Distributel, they had Bell dispatched effectively the next business day (it was a weekend that I called in). I had 3rd party Rogers Internet for years too, but don't recall having any issues, so it was just the initial install which went fine.

I would strongly suggest she updates her email to something more portable, but I know that can be a challenge. I don't think anyone even offers email for new customers.

wow thats a great deal I wished t hey had that in British Columbia I would get it and also get my mother to switch.
the talk about the email address like from Shaw and I guess telus when my motehr got telus I imediately got her to use something like Proton mail she was using hotmail but I explained to her that something would probably happen to that email address so I got her to proton and sure enough about 3 months later she was locked out of hotmail hehe

Yeah, I checked around on their site, while using the VPN, and found that same number. When I check shaw.ca, it comes up with that same package at $180. It pisses me off that they're offering that plan above for $174, whereas that same amount in T.O. gets 2Gbps..... only difference is, the upload speed back there is a lot lower than out here.

Thanks for those - some of the numbers mentioned there were rather eye opening, like $40/month for 1.5Gbps, with anywhere between $200 - $400 bill credit. Only thing that really seems to be common about getting those decent plans, is that MOST of the people called in to cancel their plans, and then most got called back with all the good offers..... it really galls me that long time loyalty is looked at as nothing more than an endless wallet for them UNTIL they're faced with the prospect of losing that wallet!

Re: the wife's fixation on her Shaw email..... yeah, it'd be a bit of headache to update ALL of the various things that are attached to our Shaw emails, but it's certainly doable, and could definitely be worth the trouble.

when I moved and switched from Shaw years back I had the Shaw email and yes it was a bit of a pain but then that is when I realized to have multiple emails some for websites others for personal and it actually works out great, but it was a hassle which I made in my mind bigger than what it really was ,to go to the sites and emailing people to show new email addresses in my mind I was thinking days -weeks to do but it only maybe took a couple of hours over a week which probably could have been done within an hour lol

Aaaaaand, it turns out all the chatter on those RFD forums was correct, i.e. you need to actually cancel your services to get any movement on a better deal..... I cancelled our services, 2 weeks in advance, and received an email the next day, with a number to call, to talk to their Loyalty dept. I didn't call right away, and then received a voicemail the next day, giving some details on an offer they had for me. I called back today, and while I was anticipating to pay ~$160/month, a couple weeks ago, now I'll be paying ~$120 instead, including an add-on pack, plus a $300 bill credit. (y) I probably could've squeezed a little more out of them, but the process got a little lengthy, and we had plans to go out around that time, plus the deal was considerably more palatable than the $174/month the front line rep had quoted me before I decided to cancel.

Anyway, MUCHOS GRACIAS @JD for the heads-up about the RFD forums about this topic! (y)😁
