Hey there Video gurus,
I am in need of a new TV. Currently on a Sharp Aquos D64U (37") that I bought ~5 years ago when I was 15 years old. It was the first expensive thing I bought with my own money. Now, it is time to upgrade.

My budget is $2000 +/- 10%

I don't really have a preferred brand, but I want quality over sheer size. I would take a 47" even, if it looks and produces better results than a 70 or 80". Ideally though, I would like a 55" or so.

Opinions?

I still like plasma's and they are frickin cheap compared to getting a LCD LED 240hz 3D blah blah blah TV. They're worth a serious look IMO. Power consumption is still high, and there is some glare in rooms with direct sunlight on the panel tho. Depends on your preferences.

Plasma like above poster said, or prepare to spend thousands on a good LCD/LED, I settled on a 40 inch LCD, for $356 grand total I couldn't leave it in the store, but I originally was going for the same thing you are looking for, and saw that it was plasma(refuse to ever buy one) or a 240MHz LCD that would set me back around 3K.

I seem to recall that there are a couple of factors you need to think about. First, what are you watching most of all? If it is movies and sports then plasma has many advantages over the LCD/LED TVs. If you are watching a lot of TV programming and your room is bright then an LED TV has advantages because it displays well with bright ambient lighting.

Too bad about that gimmicky 3D thingy though. I hope it dies a fast death and TVs just go back to being great displays.

Home Theatre magazine was one of my favorites and their website is not too bad. Here is a link to the reviews of flat panel TVs.

Good luck, it is hard to go very wrong, really. Just make sure you set it up properly once you get it home.

This is the bad boy some other people recommended: Panasonic VIERA TC-P60GT30
I think that'll be it.

3D means nothing to me. I can't stand 3D in a theatre, so I wont want to on my couch either.
I don't game with the systems much. 10 hours A MONTH at most.

my first choice would be a panasonic 1080i 3d plasma
i don't care for 3d but it doesn't have the glare
i chose with my wallet lol got the LG 50" 720p plasma
you just can't beat the 547$ price @ costco

I'd second getting a Plasma. Gt30 is an awesome model, if you want to save some money the st30 is a great substitute it still has the infinite black 2 panel, so deeper blacks, and better contrast. Their is a four square app you can get on your phone, and save $300 off any Panasonic plasma over $850 at Best Buy, and if you do the financing(tv over $750, you get another $100 but off your statement). You can do 3 months, no interest, no admin fee, and pay it all off on your first statement for all you care. Cheers :)
