Question about RAID5

xentr_thread_starter
So after few test and deleting the raid and re-building it, i have done a update of all drivers. At this point, i still have crappy speed on big files.

I have done a update of the bios .... a few mb/s but not much.

I re-search on the web and i found the forum of Tweaktown where guys doing modification on bios. So, i was curious, i found my MB and i saw the log that they have done a update of the Intel rom Raid chipset...

I download it, and i try the risk.

BINGO... on big file (20GB) , now running stable at 115MB/s (over network), which that make me pretty happy. Ok, the speed on the small file are..... VERY SLOW..... 45MB/s but that dosen't matter.

In just done some test with files around 4GB and im getting 125MB/s stable

Hello .. its me again.

Finally, after 2 days of great speed something when wrong, and the raid system crash.

After testing all HDD one by one i presume that the raid controler on the MB crash and i will still have the same problem if i restart the whole thing again. I don't trust the chip

So, i decided to buy a really raid controler and i found this model: LSI 9260-4i 6GB/S SATA+SAS MEGARAID RAID Card.

I just hope this card will do the job correctly now.

your experience will be greatly improved with that RAID card :thumb:

I would bet against it being the ICHxR chips fault. Not sure what it would be but it just seems very unlikely. You'd probably lose all your sata ports too if that was the case.

OK ...you're the only one person that desagree that raid card.... and as you say .. i don't want loose all my other sata ports....

P.S. For now, im having fun with raid software in Win 7

I mean that the ICHxR chip is your raid chip, so if it was dead you'd have no SATA ports either.

As far as it goes, I'd say that the Intel ICHxR RAID is one of the easiest and friendliest of the RAIDs I have ever used.... and so easy to swap over / recover to a new system since any intel based MB will take your RAID.

Oh.. i understand now .. thanks for the heads up...

BTW, i have find a MegaRAID LSI 9260-4i 4-port 6Gb/s + BBU for a really really good price but without cable.

Hello,

Time to update a little this thread, I did have finally receive my raid card. The card work really well. Now, i think i will upgrade a little and purchasing a LSI 9261-8i. I think for the future when adding new hdds in the raid config.

So, back to our sheeps, the 9260 with 4 3TB drives, speed are 608MB/s read and 590 MB/s write. :bananafunky:

The speed is local. Since i have change my raid card 4i to a 8i i have have another HDD and speed is going up.

Last test was : read: 750 MB/s and write 702MB/s

Over network im still limited with 120MB/s.... which is nice and decent.
In future i will buy 2 4GB network card for speeding up
