can someone tell me where disk spanning is useful?

it sounds like it's useful for those people that hate having multiple drive letters but want to be 'slightly' 'safer' than using RAID-0.

can an OS even be installed on a.....what do I called it exactly?

I'd assume disk spanning was a lot more useful when we didn't have 1+TB drives everywhere. Think tossing a bunch of 80-250GB drives together to store movies and stuff, for example.

JBOD is often misused, but it is properly not spanning or concatenating disks. Spanning is a holdover from the days of smaller drives when you might want to creae a larger drive than was availalbe and you could create it using two or more smaller drives. It was handy for BBS operators during the time of BBS popularity when drives were expensive but a lot of space was needed.

Spanning has similar data loss risks to "Raid 0" due to increased risk of drive failure, however data recovery is much easier and more successful since spanned disks aren't usually stripped but are filled with data sequentially (ie the frst in the span is filled before writing to the next).
