I'm debating whether I want to upgrade or not and would like your thoughts. I've got a reference 980 that I can sell for $370. Should I upgrade to a 980 TI for $480 right now or wait for a 1070 to go on sale?

I've been on a bit of an upgrade spree lately and moved up from a GTX 580 that I've had since 2012. I plan on keeping this card for a good while.

Guess the main question would be what resolution are you playing at? Looks like in your specs you have a Dell U2410? So that is a 1920x1200 monitor? Do you find your 980 struggling?

If you do the 980 Ti would give you a boost for sure. Worth $480 is always debatable but you'd only be paying the difference, $110, so that wouldn't be bad. I have been contemplating selling mine and looking for a 980 Ti but I have an EVGA Classified so the performance difference would be slightly less than you would get moving up from a reference 980. However I would say if your gaming is running fine now, then perhaps saving up for the 1070 would be the overall better move. There really isn't a "right" answer. Just more the weighing of how you are finding your gaming experience now and how much you are willing to spend. A 1070 gets you into newer architecture, more VRAM again, and better DirectX 12 performance but DirectX 12 isn't a big thing yet. By the time it is you could perhaps sell the 980 Ti and the 1070s would be cheaper. Have I flip-flopped enough yet? ;) I don't see the 1070s dropping in price any time soon though.

Maybe those comments help some. Again, no right answer but the 980 Ti would be a relatively cheap performance boost (I think around 10-20% depending on game), 1070 would be the better overall long term investment but more expensive obviously.

You've summed up my thoughts pretty well. I'm waffling too hence the post.

I haven't run into any performance issues with the card yet but have a bit of the upgrade bug. I've probably been reading too many of the great reviews that SKYMTL has been writing...

Since you're not struggling on that 1080p screen, maybe look into a nice new monitor? I'd wait till the GTX1070 goes on sale, should be around Nov/Dec when we see any noticeable discounts for the holidays.

My gaming partner has a 980ti but like me he also runs at 1440p, higher res than you, but he also has to tweak game settings to keep 60fps, like I do with my gtx1070.
If you're like me, and you like eye candy turned up, stay away from 1440p. Heck I'm even considering going back to 1080p or a 21:9 screen someday to extend the life of my gpu.

I keep referring to this chart PassMark Software - Video Card (GPU) Benchmarks - High End Video Cards to give myself a refresher on where GPUs stand. The 980 is in an odd spot: high enough for most things, and too close to the 980ti or the 1070 for me to justify an upgrade, but that's me. I love my 1070 but I kind of wish it was better at 1440p. (or games were optimized better)

Guess it boils down to how your games run at your resolution. Maybe when the 1080ti shows up the prices will adjust and make the non-ti more attractive.

I just upgraded from a 980ti to a 1080 and have been a little disappointed, even though the 1080 is 20% faster. I game at 2560x1440 and have seen no real benefit for now.
Save your money, keep the 980 as at 1080 I think you would be disappointed upgrading from a 980 to 980Ti or 1070. Just my 2 cents. If I had to choose between a 980ti and a 1070 I would go with a 1070.
Even a stock 1070 appears to be around 26% faster than a GTX 980

Thanks for talking me down from an upgrade. With no performance issues I'll keep the 980 until it can't keep up.
