Wanting to build a new pc. Thoughts of the parts picked out.

I was looking into building my first pc for my birthday in a few days. I have a budget of around $850 CAD and wanted to know what you thought of the parts that were picked out for me. I would be using this for some gaming and university school work.

If you could give any suggestions as to what would make this pc better, but also keeping it in the budget, that would be great

How urgent do you need this? I would wait and snipe an AMD Ryzen R3-3300X when they are back in stock at $180. If you can't wait for or can't back order an R3-3300X, then you could go with the slightly older AMD R5-2600 and pair with with an AMD RX580 8GB.

No idea what the difference is between the H410 and H470 motherboard so you have to do some homework. Don't bother with 3200GHZ ram on Intel, unless you're running a K CPU with a Z board, you will never hit that speed. Ideally, you want a i5-10600 if you're going Intel and a R5-3600 or R3-3300X if you're going AMD. But those are out of your budget.

Is that Ryzen build substantially better than the initial build I put forth. is the gpu much different than the 1660 super, and is the 2600 much better than the 9100f? Also, is the 3300x that much better, keeping in mind that I have no knowledge about pc's. Thanks for all the help

I think your original choices are fine too if gaming is your focus. I believe the GTX 1660 Super is a bit faster than the RX 580.

The builds moocow posted would give you better productivity performance since they're both 6-core CPUs, and in the case of the Ryzen 2600, it has 12 threads too. Depends what university work implies - if you're majoring in something where you need to render things, then you want as many cores/threads as possible. If it's just writing reports and researching, then it doesn't really matter.

yea gaming will definitely be the main focus of the build. The schoolwork will be for criminal justice, so yea writing reports and researching. It turns out I am very lost in the world of computers and I have no clue as to what to build.

If you want to stick with i3 price range, I would go with R3-3100 because it at least gives you more threads. In some of the gaming benchmark, it's either on par with the i3-9100F or beat it by 10 frames or so. More importantly, since it got SMT, you have 8 logical threads instead of 4 and the benefits really shows in productivity benchmarks. Even in Adobe, which is shown to be more single thread friendly, the R3-3100 beats the i3-9100F. The only problem is that the R3-3300X is a lot better in games and it's only $20 USD more but they are sold out everywhere. If you need an urgent budget machine, I would go with AMD. At least later down the road you can browse the used market and upgrade to a more powerful R5-3600, R7-3700X, or R9-3900. And assuming the motherboard manufacturers will update their B450 boards, you can flash the BIOS and plug in the yet to be release Ryzen 4000 line of processors. If you go with Intel, you get none of that flexibility and worst yet, you are going for a platform (9th gen Intel), that is already dead and no room to upgrade and the used prices are insane.

Another thing as well is Renoir should be released in two days and you may be able to get something similar to a 3300 X without much of a price difference but actually be in stock. I.e the 4200G
