discussion which CPU do you recommend?

Hello, I guess, I'm not the first to ask that. What should I go for?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ (65W) Dual-Core Socket AM2 (canadacomputers, $70)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (65W) Dual-Core Socket AM2 (canadacomputers, $75)
AMD Athlon X2 BE-2300 (45W) Dual-Core Socket AM2 (canadacomputers, $100)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (65W) Dual-Core Socket AM2 (canadacomputers, $102)
AMD OPTERON 1210 1.8Ghz Dual-CORE 1210 AM2 (Infonec, $109)

What about steppings?

I'm not too sure on how well the opteron oc's but if you are going Amd get the 6000+. I believe they are about $150-$170 IMO worth the extra dough but if you wanna oc then intel all the way. Just my 2 cents:biggrin:

it's $196 at canadacomputers...the X2 3600+ seems to be able to reach 3Ghz and costs only $70. Why do you recommend more the 6000+? thanks

If you dont have an AM2 board already you may want to consider going C2D.

Never build an Intel machine, and AMD is overall cheaper, no?

The 6000+ seems to get 3.2GHz+ quite readily as it uses the same fab/materials as the FX7x CPU's. Lots of people reporting 3.4-3.5GHz with them. Brisbanes are good for about 3GHz or so. If I had to choose again I'd pick the 6000+.

As for Intel, right now, they cost more to build and the motherboards are more money as an AM2 board feature for feature. A 6000+ is as strong as a E6600 at stock speeds. If you ask me, there's no real strong reason to pick C2D over AMD because there is little that takes advantage of ANY CPU running faster than 3GHz. People will chime in about C2D Quads dropping to $300 or so in price soon, but they run hotter than the sun.

It's personal preference and if your E-Penis is already big enough, you really don't need a C2D running 3.5GHz since in real world use, you'll not notice the increase in speed. I'm not against Intel, I just don't see a major benefit on spending more for an Intel based PC when a nice and cheaper AMD system will be nearly as fast in real world use.

I just hate to see people buying new systems drop $ on AMD when you can get a better C2D setup for the same price. To each his own though, it's not like AM2 systems suck, its just Intel has the upper hand right now in terms of performance.

Any one of those combos will outperform an AM2 system when OCed, even your 6000+. These prices are also before price drops that will be here in a week or 2.

Prices from NCIX, if you shop around it be a lil cheaper.
