is it safe to assume price drops for these cards are incoming since the new nvidia cards were released?

I wouldn't assume they are dropping prices at all, right now. They seem to be selling around $440, while the GTX480 is around $540 for pre-orders. That doesn't give them any incentive to cut prices, in my opinion. If I didn't GPU fold, I'd be picking up a 5870 myself.

We may see the 5870 come down to about 400$ but thats probably just going to be for sales
Sufficed to say, AMD is not threatened at all by the GTX4xx series thus far. They still have the 5970 leading the pack as the "world's fastest" for bragging rights, and considering the regular 5870 is only 10-15% behind a GTX480, and that newer 2gb versions are on the horizon, i don't see why they would change anything.

In most cases that doesn't seem to happen with a "refresh".... what normally seems to happen is that the older stock just dries up at current prices. You might see a few one-of sales, but that will probably be all.
As has already been stated above, I doubt very much that ATI is going to feel enough of a threat from Fermi to change much in the way of pricing......
Really, the only incentive for ATI/retailers to drop prices right now is if TSMC started churning out more of those 40nm chips to satisfy the demand.
jesus, i can't believe Nvidias lackluster release is so bad i wont be able to buy a new card lol.
