And the few that are at 12K tax in are pure crap. If you want a new car that is good will last long expect 16-18K not really well equiped. for 20-22K you can have a good car full equiped.

That is absolutely not true. As long as the car is able to be brought up to Canadian safety standards, you can import anything. You do have to pay taxes and import fees though if the value is high enough. I work with alot of used car dealers and they regularly import 2010 trucks/cars and I know for a fact anyone can import even a new car if they want to pay the price premium for it.

And if he contacts the goverment service and determines his car is importable, he can have it placed in a shipping container and have it imported should he choose to pay the shipping and import fees. Just how do you think cars get here from over seas?
 
After import fees, taxes, shipping, and lack of spare parts for the car, IMO, its much easier and cheaper to sell the car in India and get something here.

Just realized that the chevy beat in india is worth about $9000 new, hrm... we need some cars priced like that over here.

But as with the others, there is no way you could get a new car for 8000, let alone a family car. The chevy aveo starts at 13k and I believe thats the closest thing to the beat you could get :S

They are generally cheaper overseas as they don't have the strict emissions and safety standards that Canada and the US have in place.

China developed a car that would cost about $2500 Cdn but it unfortunately did not meet our safety requirements.
 
Have you eer seen some of the crash videos of those Chinese cars? It is downright horrifying as to how badly the crumple and deform even in minor crashes.
