Microsoft announces Windows 10

The latest cumulative update (KB4015438) is absolutely brutal on low processing power cpus. On both my Pentium N3530 and my AM1 quad it's required several reboots and just sits there accessing the SSD for over an hour.

Not sure exactly what it's doing but it looks like it's doing whatever to every single file on the system........

Well, although to this point I have had minimal friction with Windows 10, none really, I have to finally join the ranks of the frustrated. I'm beating it but it has been a pain! I have another thread going about virtualization but related to reinstalling a clean install of 10 I have been having a great (loads of sarcasm) time.

Maybe I was insulated from it before because of upgrading my PCs from 8.1 to 10? Not sure. Last night while trying to do a clean install, once Windows 10 had made it to the desktop it installed a graphics driver as part of the updates that pooched my system again. It rebooted and then just sat on a black screen with the spinning dots for hours. Never returned. Fixed it by installing 10 (again) and then when it wanted to restart following that update I didn't allow it and updated the driver myself with the latest from NVIDIA. Then it was fine.

That was only one of the things. There were others like ASUS tools install issues that took me to a BSOD when they always worked before. And then there are all the Microsoft-wants-to-track-everything-you're-doing settings (I know; talked about already) and the goofy way they want you to create users. Just let me make a user! You don't need to know if it's a family member or not and no I don't want to give their email to you so they can sync across the universe! I shouldn't have to search on the web to find out how to make a local account because it is buried 3 or 4 layers deep. I know you don't want me to make a local account Microsoft... Annoying.

Anyway once installed I still prefer 10 to 8.1 but this has been a bigger adventure than I expected. Reminds me of Scotty's great quote after sabotaging the Excelsior, "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."

Any number of you can say "I told you so" now if you like.

Creating a local user account:

Right click the start button --> click "Computer Management" --> click "Local Users and Groups"--> Click "Users"

No need to use the new UI interface with all the info it requests.

Yup, found that. Thanks for pointing it out though. But my beef is why do I HAVE to find that? Perhaps some people like the new UI? I dunno. It seems more like obfuscation of information to funnel people into making networked accounts so Microsoft can track what they want to track. I know that's their game plan, I still find it frustrating. I don't mind the tracking so much; I'm a big Google user so they are tracking me anyway more than I care to think about! I just don't like that the UIs hide so much stuff that it makes the workflow for tasks harder IMO.

I actually haven't gone through settings/UI of any kind since Windows 7. I use search or run everything (Windows + S, Windows + R). Of course, I type incredibly fast and windows shortcuts are faster than mouse clicking by their nature.

Most settings a power user would find beneficial have always been buried in specific menus throughout the various iterations of Windows - this isn't new. What's new is that this is the first Windows operating system to fully integrate internet/social media aspects in a presentable and usable fashion - but the entire ecosystem is heavily reliant on getting your Microsoft account connected to the OS - to this end, new UI options are going to push you towards that.

While I personally don't care for any of the added functionality and stick with a local account, it does remain interesting how many avenues are opened up once a MS account is associated to the computer.

Just got the creator's preview build It work really good. I am on the insiders preview. The only thing that sucked was that I had to change settings back they way I had it before. Like Xbox DVR recording etc.

For those with MSDN accounts, the ISO's are up for the 1703 aka "Creators Update" Build 15063. The SHA-1 hash is the same as the "Insider Preview" ISO's from last week.

1703 is now available for everyone who's interested. It's apparently going to roll out relatively slowly through normal channels (they're supposedly being smart this time around and only pushing it out initially to hardware configs that shouldn't run into any issues) but if you want it now you can install the "download assistant" which will walk you through the steps to get it right away.

Running on my new (to me) e6420 without any apparent issues other than having to track down the dell freefall sensor driver. Couple of things it didn't do was change my group policy setting WRT Cortana, and/or re-install all of the crapware I'd uninstalled the last time around.

Yeah this upgrade seems a bit smoother. Of the 6 machines I've upgraded at home, only my Alienware 13 R3 has issues now with Windows Hello. However, that stems back to flaky Realtek IR Camera drivers I think as I ran into issues with 1607 too. However, previously I managed to get it to work by uninstalling in device manager and using the default driver, but that doesn't seem to be working for me now. Guess I'll need to wait for Dell/Realtek to release a proper driver...

The Tobii tracking portion still works though, it still dims the screen when I step away and "wakes" up when I look at it. I just can't log into Windows with my face.

I might end up trying a fresh install too since I don't have much on it.
