AMD Radeon HD 6970 and HD 6950 Review Comment Thread

Acoustics are far too subjective. Not everyone has the same case, fan setup, distance from case to person and most importantly 'tolerance' to the noise. What you find loud, someone else might find acceptable/quiet.

+1 on that. In theses kinds of discussion I always remember deathhawk who finds delta fan noise acceptable.

So then why just now they have started using it? Just to think how much the faith of the GTX480 could have been different... and what about CPU coolers? Still stuck with those heatpipes...
Just to remember you that Vapor chamber is using by sapphire since the 4870 day so at least 2 years. And the design is wasy older than that. Nvidia did not create anything by putting that on their card. They only use a older tech. So no one copy no one. Thinking the way you do we could say hey Nvidia copyed on sapphire for the vapor chamber design.
I would also like to remember you that, according to guru3D, the 6950 have the same noise lvl than the 580 and the 6970 is 1db over.
Seriously, your comment just look like product bashing. If you don;t love them just don't post.

That simply isn't true. Even if it was, there is no way I would make mention of it.

I have absolutely no intent on choosing games based on which company they favour. I choose the games based on their ability to benchmark well and their overall graphics load.

If the list tends to favour NVIDIA then so be it. They sink millions into their developer relation program and should NEVER be punished for that.
I think I was mis-understood slightly. I'm not saying that a personal choice was made on game selection based on how well they perform on a brand of hardware. I feel that some games are optimized to support features that either favour red or green and prefer when reviews talk about this. I know some sites have specifically noted their refusal to benchmark with HAWK 2 (sorry can't remember if your site is one of them) in the past because they felt it was optimized to perform poorly on ATI hardware at the time.

I don't think it's a bad thing either way, I just like to see it noted.

Well, that's why I suggest a reference noise level that can be used for all tests and you can simply say "louder/quieter than case fans." I think that more people are starting to care about acoustics as computers move into every room in our house. Maybe It's still a small group of us who care that much, but I'm just stating my thoughts. I know what you mean as I read a review before buying my PhysX card and they said "quiet card" and when I installed it in my case, UH OH! The thing is at least 2x the volume than the rest of my case because the card only runs the fan at max speed :shok: Which is why I will be selling it soon after beating mafia 2...

From playing with more Fans then I care to note, it would be unfair to say merely louder or quieter than case fans because both the way a Case mounts the Fan and its acoustics it leaves too many variables to chance. I understand what you are saying, I am just merely noting that it is almost the impossible task. I can mount a CM R4 for example in my Lexa S and it sounds nothing like the ones mounted in my Scout. So even using the same fan I have different noise created because of the way a case is constructed.

We will likely be adding HawX 2 to the benchmarking suite but this "made to run slower on AMD hardware" was simply a PR campaign that AMD waged after the game was released to explain their utter lack of optimizations for it. I am giving them another ~month or so to roll out some properly functioning support structures for that game. If not, it is still likely going to be included in the benchmarking suite.

Yeah, it's not like HAWK 2 is a TWIMTBP game, or that nvidia ever pushed game devs to unoptimize games for the competition (*cough* batman *cough*), or that the way the game benches currently puts it outside the curve compared to other games. What you're saying amounts to calloing AMD liers...

Not every flaw can be fixed at the driver level.

Very nice review.

Some interesting things to consider in respects to price, power, temp and performance. It's nice to have a pretty good variety of choices in the high-end video card category.

My only regret is that I just built my brother a PC a few weeks ago and put a 5850 in his rig (it was less than $200 with rebate!). Had I been paying attention, I would have taken his 200$, put MY old 5850 in his rig and ordered myself a 6950 for what would amount to about 120$.

Ah well... as it is now, my current stable of games does not push my card to anywhere near its limit since I am only at 1680x1050. So I guess my next real upgrade cycle will fall into the 7000 series.

Cheers!

amazed

I'm amazed how much faster the 580 is in many games. For me its worth the extra bucks.

I highly doubt the launch was delayed to shave some meat off of a power connector housing.

Would you mind taking off the HSF to see if it was shaved off or not? As far fetched as it sounds there are pictures floating around the internet showing the back corner of the 8pin on the 6970 cut off.

You know, this doesn't seem that far-fetched to me. The partners get their shipments, they're all ready to start throwing them together and then realize: Hey, this doesn't fit! Who screwed this up? If every single card had to be altered so the cooler would fit, I could see it delaying the launch by a couple of weeks... remember, I think the original plan was Nov 22, right?
