AMD's about to release another SIX Ryzen 5000 APU.

Why not an ARM-based system running Android or Linux though? Kodi works fine on those platforms. Should be able to stream via Moonlight if you want to game on the TV too.
Eh. I like AMD stuff, longtime fan. Plus even a 5xxxG gpu can do some light gaming or emulation when I want to. I used to like having Windows machines around the place for familiarity, but might move to a Kodi -centric Linux soon because I actually don't really use much of the windows features anymore. But it is familiarity, emulators, etc and Kodi with Windows, because if they were just Kodi boxes I'd have switched them all to Linux +Kodi ages ago. And I'm still very much a Linux newbie too, so there's that. 🤷‍♂️

x86 is just very expensive, especially in the DIY category. Assuming these run around the same price as current chips, the 5700G is $259 today, limited options of AM4 ITX boards, somewhere in the realm of $300. You'd have to "upsize" to mATX to get something cheaper at ~$150. Either scenario, it's well over the cost of similar pre-built MiniPC's - and that include a PSU, case, memory, NVMe, and even a Windows license.

Not too sure what AMD is thinking here, unless it's strictly for OEM's that still have a surplus of AM4 boards but somehow lack CPUs.

Used market for AM4 is thriving, can easily get a decent B550 -ish for around $120, a B350 for $100 or less. And SOME people (like me) have tons of older parts sitting around that would work just fine. Cases, PSUs, fans, coolers, etc. Many of them just laying around, waiting for a fun little build.

And then, theres the late -upgraders (which is also me haha) that have been using some first gen Ryzen mobos for 2 cpus already, and wouldnt mind a big performance boost and/or power usage decrease for an existing system. Its too early to be 100% certain, but im willing to bet even the weirdest new GE chips will still be compatible with B350 mobos.

I think AMD should be praised for offering affordable and interesting options for ALL users, and for all budgets. Can't afford to switch to AM5? You *still* don't have to! IMO it's a good thing.

honestly, AMD needs to offer their mobile CPU as a standalone product. of course, that means they would need to have partners to offer motherboards that they could be installed in.

Would love to see this as well TBH, because as I've mentioned elsewhere, I still want to build a Real APU gamer box someday, and a 7xxx or 8xxx mobile chip with a 780m would be pretty cool, especially if the newer AI APUs are super expensive at launch. 🤷‍♂️

That's the crazy part about computer parts, being at the right time at the right place:

This seems to be unfortunate trend of being ready to click "buy" as soon as you see a deal without having other parts ready...
