Anybody run their own "PC Business" willing to share information...?

You can build them for sorta the same money but what you lack that Dell has is customer support.

The biggest difference in price between what we can build, and what a big-box producer can is the OS.

Most times I've thrown together a basic build I come up short by just enough to purchase a legit OS.

The biggest cost to any system is the monitor.

Windows XP Home can be purchased for $80 give or take.

A 19" 4:3 monitor is $200 off the top.

I think the only way to make real money out of the business is corporate / business accounts.

Yah, thats what I do. All my customers are commercial/corporate. I don't mark up my systems much at all, but I charge them to set it up, install all the software. I make a pretty penny off of servers though. The bulk of my business is not hardware sales and support though I do IT support, database/server admin lots of custom programming.

and i totally fuck people who bring me computers full of viruses and spyware. $200+ to clean it out. They learn fast. Problem is most are thankfull because of course they did not have backups of all their precious work/pictures/music etc...

By the way, anybody here a Premier Partner at NCIX... and are the prices really better ?

Sometimes but not always.

Its a real crap shoot as sometimes sale prices are better than pp prices and sometimes pp prices is only like a $5-10 difference on some items. On others well the pp margin is HUGE.

For those that are not incorporated please be advised that it is your neck that is on the line entirely if you ever get sued. That includes all of your material goods and assets.

Incorporation is cheap, easy and prevents you from baring personal cost if you ever get sued. Most people think it won't happen to them and they'd rather not become incorporated because of cost and hassle.

It is true that it is safer if you incorporate. It is not much of a hassle because you just hire people. IMHO, you should only incorporate if you are going to make a full time commitment to the business and are willing to learn all the rules and regulations. Once you incorporate and get your tax numbers, and such, you will have continued commitments to report and file. You have to keep on top of these things or the tax man will come after you.

The biggest down side for a new small business is the extra tax. The business is taxed on net profits; the last time I checked business taxes were about 20%. When you pay yourself from the remaining profits you are charged personal income tax. If you need to take all the profit out (for example, to eat) then you pay more tax.

Here is a good "getting started" guide from the Ontario government:

When you're incorporated, the last thing you want to do is pay yourself. You can however emit dividends on your stock, of just have the business pay for your needs.
