ASUS X99 Sabertooth Motherboard Review Comment Thread

Really nice board, I've always like the sabertooth line's shrouding, but I can't help but think that coming this late in the x99 platform with Skylake on the horizon, they might not move too many of these. I still like the color layout of the deluxe a bit more, but get that this is supposed to have a more military look to it.

I'm mixed to idea of the fan though. Is there really enough heat in that area that it's necessary? At least AkG mentioned it's pretty easy to set the fan speed, so you're not forced to listen to a high pitched 'whiiiiirrrrr'. (Assuming that you can really hear it over all the other fans ;) )

Really like the Sabertooth line. The 5 year warranty is something that in the past I never cared about because I always upgraded my PCs in less than 3 years. But my i7 920 stayed around almost 6 years and I am guessing my 4790K will be similar if not more. So 5 years on a motherboard is certainly attractive now.

Is it for sure that this won't support Skylake? I remember reading something about ASUS releasing an X99-E WS board that I thought would support Broadwell and Skylake, but that was also an LGA 2017-A rather than LGA 2011-3 socket. I did get lost in the Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake shuffle. I know Haswell supports Broadwell, but wasn't sure about Broadwell to Skylake.

I dont have it installed and have noticed zero issues without it. Worst comes to worst I will pull the 'shield' off instead of using ANY 40mm fan...but I doubt it will come to that as my case has very good airflow. ;)

Skylake and Skylake-E have completely different pin-outs.

I have the x79 saber tooth and I initially used that fan but set it to be quiet. The fan died though but I noticed zero difference after the fan died. Maybe a small increase in temps but not a big deal.

Until Intel or AMD release something significantly more powerful I see no reason to upgrade. Hell you can still get decent frame rates on even X58 hardware although I would definitely upgrade from that though.

Here's hoping that Skylake-E will be a worthy upgrade.

If I hadn't needed a travel sized rig for a while, I'd still be rocking my X58/i7 970 combo.

The Z97 i5 mitx I'm on at the moment is decent, but a little underpowered. I won't need to replace it, but I'll enjoy having a proper sized board and kit again eventually.

Look into the Asrock mITX X99...hopefully more companies /cough/ ASUS /cough/ will follow suit. ;)

They were reluctant to even do mATX but ended up going ahead with one (X99M-WS) and that still garnered a comment that they doubt they'd sell more than 4000 units - that's probably their threshold for R&D costs on such a venture.

I suppose they are content letting Asrock lead innovation in SFF.

Yeah my next build I want to try something smaller mATX is most likely what I would go with as I would still have room for a PCIe SSD or something. mITX is a possibility but I am just worried about the lack of expandability but honestly SATA SSD's are fast enough. Maybe I would go with that Node 202 that you guys review as that looks like a sick case. The Node 804 is what I would go with if I went mATX right now.
