My friend called me up and asked should i buy an h61 chipset and gtx590?
I cut the phone and now thinking it will not perform good even though he has 2600k cpu?

If he's not overclocking and is sticking with one GPU that will be fine. Performance is relative - e.g. that combination would be fine for 3D Vision + very big monitor but only playing GPU-bound games, not that a 2600k at default speeds is a bottleneck for anything yet.
He'd obviously get better results with a P67 or Z68 to OC the 2600k.
