So i am looking to clone my segate 320gb drive over to my new 1 tb WD Black.
I am wanting to use the new drive as the new primary drive, than after a couple weeks (to make sure the 1tb doesn't go bad) I want to change the 320gb drive into a storage drive to hold back up copys of all my music, movies etc.

So I have read around and Acronis Western Digital Edition software seems to work well for this. I just have a couple questions before I go for it.

Do I have to format the 1tb drive before trying to clone?
Will the automatic mode on Acronis produce an exact copy onto the 1tb and leave the stuff on the 320gb?
I believe my 320 is one complete partion, so the extra space in the 1 tb will just be added to this in the automatic mode correct?

Any help would be great. Thanks

Nathan

EDIT: Also on another note, I have an old ide drive as well. if I use this as well would it slow down the transfer rates from the sata drives?

Most of your assumptions are correct:

- you don't need to partition or format your target 1TB hard drive (acronis does this for you)
- Acronis will make an exact copy of your 320 onto your 1TB and will leave your 320's data un-modified
- Acronis will automatically re-size the target partition so it will be a complete 1TB once the cloning is finished.

Using an IDE drive as storage or something should not affect the sata hdd's performance, unless an app has to utilize information from both types of drives, the ide will be your slow point. Can't see a lot of situations like that though

What if I cloned a 250GB hard drive into a 640GB hard drive? My 250GB hard drive is already divided into 3 partitions and I'd like to keep 3 partitions on the 640GB hard drive as well.

Both my hard drives are from Western Digital so I can use Acronis for that type of job.

Well I went for it yesterday and everything worked out great.

Thanks again for the help.
