just a question, have you done anything not listed to make 1080p runable?

Thanks for reminding me!

I had a hell of a time repeating the problem with other videos, and had decided it must be the video clips themselves. However, it seemed odd that there would be multiple ones not working. After some more thinking on it, I think it was because they were both apple.com movie trailers in HD. Other HD vids seemed to work OK. I had intended to do a bit more testing, but forgot. Now that you've mentioned it, I'm going to take another look, confirm that, and report back.

Also, I don't think I mentioned in my worklog that I solved the issue with controllers always being recognized in the right order. It took a bit more work in Linux programming than I wanted, but it did eventually function the way I wanted.

Cheers.

OK. I did some testing tonight, which included installing XMBC on the system. The bright side is, XMBC works much better than the version of VLC player I was trying. The downside is that 1080p content is still a *little* tricky. The system seems to be able to handle all of my previous video clips (trailers) in 1080p without an issue. However, I also tried an MP4 bluray rip (lossless quality, and 5.1 audio) and fastforwarding would cause the audio and video to go out of sync for a while; it was clear the system was being taxed heavily. It also becomes difficult to do anything else while a 1080p video plays--even navigate the XMBC menu.

720p seems to go without a hitch at all. I hope that answers your question.
