Hi guys,

A friend just bought an older Supermicro 2p board as seen here Intel LGA1366 quad core xeon i7 processor (pair), motherboard | system components | City of Toronto | Kijiji and I need advice on what heatsinks are needed as he didn't give her any plus anything else she will need. The reason she bought it was that her old motherboard died and this seemed like a great deal. She has quad channel ram but not sure if this board needs ECC or not.

Also, I think she will need a second power adaptor for the board as well. Currently she is using a Seasonic but I can't remember which model. I'm not in Toronto and won't be until I'm down there to help her out so all info will be greatly appreciated. If you have any parts that I need please speak up :) She doesn't have a lot of money so please take that into consideration.

Thanks

Any heatsink that can dissipate the max wattage of those cpus can be used. I had a CM212 installed on a Dell Prevision T3500 mobo by 3.0charlie but he had to remove the cpu plate that came originally with the motherboard and it worked just fine. The ram : the ram is just ram, there is no simple/dual/triple/quad channel ram! The memory controller in the cpu dictates the ram configuration! The 2P 1366 boards support both regular and ecc ram but in different quantities : i think is like 24GB regular ram or 96GB ecc ram. I think those figures are for boards with 3 dimms per cpu. If there are 6 dimms per cpu like the SR2 for example that number doubles as well. Your best hope of getting help is to tell us the exact mobo model and cpu models as well. Supermicro will offer no overclocking so the cpus will only turbo 266mhz on top of the max listed speed sk uou don't need super duper heatsinks. However server/workstation heatsinks and fans can be quite expensive, you might want to settle for regular desktop heatsinks. Also you need to find out if the motherboard is ATX or E-ATX in size, makes a big difference in the price of the case required. I can recommend deepcool gamaxx 300 as heatsink it can dissipate up to 130W and is 20$ at Canada Computers.

I was able to get the motherboard model. It's a Supermicro X8DTL. I'll do some reading on it but I sure hope it's an ATX board. I'll be in Toronto for like a day and need to get this setup in a few hours haha. So if anyone has any of the parts I will need please let me know as I'd like to get them ahead of time (or at least paid for) so I have as little running around as possible.

Was hoping for a few more replies as well. I know quite a few people here built 2p setups back in the day.

Thanks

The mobo is atx in size so you are ok there. The ram configuration is like i mentioned it 24GB regular ddr3 or 96 ecc. All you need is to install the heatsinks. For the power supply if you have one with just an 8 pin eps connector you can just get 4 pin to 8 pin connectors and it will work fine. The integrated Matrox chip for video output doesn't have full drivers for win7 or above, i would suggest any nVidia gpu of 8 series or above for full display controls, otherwise on Radeon side everything above 2000 series like a 2400xt should work fine.

Cool, thanks. Looks like I just need the heatsinks and the 4 pin to 8 pin adapter. Hopefully it's as straightforward as that :)

I'll be working on it today so if I have anymore questions I'll post it here.

Thanks again for your advice

I think the biggest problem I'm going to have is the cpu cooler. I'd rather not try and remove the back plates as they look to be on pretty good. I compared the current t cpu cooler as the screws are way bigger than what the board supports. I'll have to purchase at Canada Computers on Kennedy so if you know of any coolers that's will fit and are in stock there please let me know :)

Scratch that last comment. It's just the backing plate on the old mobo that makes it look like the screws are bigger.

I ended up using an old cooler that I had. The issue I'm having is that the system is hanging during post. It's not recognizing the ssd I believe. It shows all the sata ports but it says nothing is connected to it. Oddly enough I can't even get into the bis while the ssd is connected. So I have to disconnect the ssd to get into the bios and I've tried disabling ahci but that's not making a difference.

Any clues as to how to get this to work. I know it's a working board so at least that's good. Memory is installed in the a slots as recommended. I'm hoping not to pull any since one or two are under the cpu cooler so it would be a real pain to have to do that.

Help! :)
