The story is that the actual first microprocessor is the MP944 made by Nippon Calculating Corporation that powered the F-14 Tomcat's variable sweep wing system. It was 8x faster than the 4004 but it was not publicly known since it was classified until 1998.

interesting. the MP944 was not x86 but was 20bit while the 4004 was x86 but only 4bit...which would be the reason the 944 was more powerful.
