FLOODED

I lost a lot of stuff in a flood in ottawa round 2008 and it was a painful process. I did manage to salvage a lot of stuff that got wet though but ended up having to replace my main system and a few other things. I try to keep my stuff off the floor now if it has any value, especially if it's plugged in and running all the time.

stuff that's unplugged and powered off though has a good chance of surviving. I saw someone else mention isopropyl on the first page and that's exactly what i was going to suggest as well was doing a quick rinse on stuff that was on the floor and got wet. especially if it was unplugged and just there. let it dry out a couple days, give it a rinse with isopropyl and let that dry out a bit longer. It doesn't take long for isopropyl to evaporate but I like to play it safe and give it plenty of time

Emergency cleanup guys and the appraiser arrived today. The former set up three Real dehumidifiers which will likely have to run for almost a week. Still unsure for now just how much of the basement is going to get chopped up. One guy said the floors and maybe 1-2 of the walls on the bottom, another thinks almost everything is going to have to go.

Got a long road ahead of me. What a nightmare.

The chopping up part comes fast. Restoring not so much.

At least they're on it now and it didn't take a week just to get the appraiser in before anything could get started. Hopefully the "chopping up" part goes quickly and thus removes any health risks due to mold. PITA having to work around / live with a half finished basement, but hopefully it'll be in a state you can continue using until such time as the restoration work takes place.

This happened to Braineater a long time ago. They chopped up his basement and nothing happened for months. So he fired them and did it himself.

Floors ripped up end of last week, a whole weekend of dehumifiers and fans screaming away to dry it all out. Been sick the whole time, not sure if it's connected or just bad timing.

Next steps? New water heater (old one took in water into its insulation), maybe some plumbing fixes and/or electrical fixes, picking out new floors and carpets... ugh. Too much at once.
