So I was thinking of picking this up. It seems like a really good deal. I was previously thinking of the 760, but they're the same price, and it seems like this should be around the 770(at least when overclocked.)

Does anyone have any input on this? Just like to be sure of things before spending like $300!

How urgently do you need the card/upgrade? AMD is due to release/launch their new cards soon, you could hold out a little while to see what their performance is like before jumping on a card. Also, depending on what their performance is, it may force nVidia to lower their prices more to offer a competitive solution.

It's not overly urgent. Just a good sale on right now, though they seem to be popping up a lot. I just read that the new AMD card that's going to be $300 is basically a 7970, so I wasn't sure if it was a big deal to wait or not.

At the same time, I am pretty tired of this GTS 250...

I bought one of those Gigabyte HD7970 OC cards earlier this month. Paid $275 (and am waiting on a $30 MIR - believe that when I get it).
That's $270 after mail in rebate. If you buy it through Memory Express they will give you 25% on the price match. They want $350 for that card, so $350-300 (price before MIR) = $50 x .25 = $12.50 off or $300-$12.50=$287.50 then you apply for your MIR and hope it comes.

HD9770 price history chart I'm a novice at this but I think it is safe to say cards are their highest price when first released and then come down over time, until they are phased out. The gamble is "how low will they go before they are gone?". Cause once they are gone they probably are not making any more of the old model.

So do i want to have the latest and best or the a good enough card at a great price. It usually is one or the other. Pay to be on the cutting (bleeding) edge of technology with all the bragging rights, or be a bargain hunter and save a few dollars. The new one no doubt will be better but I'll be surprised if it is priced the same as this one.

Gigabyte seems like a fairly good company, so I imagine the mail in rebate will come through. For me I'm definitely more of waiting it out and getting a card for under $300, I just can't justify spending any more than that, really.

Thanks for the tip with memoryexpress, too!

$299 less a $30 rebate is a dam good deal on any 7970 if you are buying today. If you're not in a hurry, wait for the new AMD cards to release, it may make a difference in your buying decision. And save you some money.

TBH, I don't factor rebates into my purchasing decisions. The return is 8-10 weeks down the line, and you have to spend the money up front. It's a bonus to me when they do eventually show up.
