Well I'm looking to get myself on thr folding bandwagon and add a good gpu for folding. I am in talks with two members on here for two different gpus, a gx2 and a 295. I have also had suggestions of a 275 or 2 260s. I like the looks of the 295 becuase I can get pretty much 20k ppd while taking up one slot. But it is twice as expensive as the gx2 but gets around twice the ppd. I also like the gx2 which gets 10k and is half the price of the 295. What are your opinions?

It all depends on how much you're looking to spend. As for now, NVIDIA is the way to go, however GPU3 might change all that so if you don't mind waiting, then wait.

Now if you want to purchase right now and get the best bang for buck, go for the 9600GSO 96 shaders or GT240. The GT240 costs quite a bit though since it was just released on the market and supply shouldn't be too high due to the problems TSMC is having with 40nm. If cost isn't a factor, then consider the GTX275 or GTX295. Between the 9800GX2 and GTX275, I'd take the 9800GX2 because it folds better and gets more PPD. However, I think it's a bit more difficult to set up. The other members can chime in on this.

You could also get multiple GPUs, such as a GT240 and GTX275 or something like that.

Hope it helps! Way To Fold

Thanks for the input. I'm looking to spend around $200-$300 but would go to 400 for a 295 because it does around 20k ppd. They would be going in my existing rig which has a 5870 but I've heard it's possible to put both in. I am looking for pretty good card as you can see but only have two double slots free and one single. I am leaning towards either the gx2 or the 295 for sure now.

IMO a 9800GX2 isn't worth it because of the high power consumption. You can get just about the same PPD from an overclocked GTX275 with much less power use and less heat. A GTX295 would be the best option if you can go up to that price level.

From what I've seen A gx2 only uses around 217w and a 275 isn't much less. I will look into the 295 though my favourite option so far

Hi all,

I bought a pair of 9800GX2's and they BOTH died within a year.
The heat produced from them makes them short lived at best.
That was a 600.00 mistake.

Take care...........

PS: Bright side is they actually kept my computer room warm, I turned the heat off to save electricity.

Aha yea my room is already hot with my i7 folding. I will take that into acount. The 295 keeps lookibg better and Better

Hi again,

From what I have read and researched, the GTX 295 is about the best on the market now.
They are still a little spendy, but worth it!
Of course, things change rapidly in this game.

Take care..........

In that case, I take back what I said for the 9800GX2. Since you're looking to spend big money, get 2 GTX 275 and call it a day.

You already have a 5870 and you're going to run it with your future NVIDIA GPUs? Good luck. I say wait for GPU3 first, then make your decision then.
