Help needed for a new TV

Hello,

I would like to buy my first TV! I'm honestly a total noob when it comes to TV! I will not game on the TV (I don't have a console, and I won't buy one). It will be use to watch Hd channels and some HD movies. I would prefer a full HD TV. I'll watch it from a distance of 7,5-8 feet, so I think that I should limit myself to a 40", no? I'm also in a very bright room, so I think that LCD is the way to go.

I still have some questions :
- 60 or 120 hz
- brand?
- protection plan?

My budget would be around 1100-1200 including tax and warrranty, but less is better!

If you're not going to be using as a pc monitor as i do and no console gaming then you're wasting your money going to 120Hz or 240Hz since content in HD doesn't really refresh near the 60Hz speed even. Remember, you have to do 1/frequency to find out how fast it'll refresh the pixels on the screen. 60 Hz = 0.016 seconds, 120Hz = 0.0083 seconds and 240Hz = 0.00416 seconds. Arguably the human eye in tandem with how the brain works can't really tell the difference going faster then 0.1 seconds.

For brand, i would recommend the major ones, Sony (going to be a bit more expensive), Samsung (myself, my parents and my brother each own different models of 1080p and we love them, plus haven't had any issues with it especially moving my tv around 4+ times due to being a student), and LG.

If you know going in that you want a 'protection' plan or extended warranty before going you can typically get a bit of a discount on your purchase if you seem hesitant or ask them if they could take a little off if you were to get the 2 or 4 years since money is a little tight (its all about making it seem you may not want it to get them to give you a deal). Any more questions at least on how to deal with the salesperson when you're at futureshop/best buy let me know on irc (or any other info about tvs)
 
120Hz TVs work by interpolating the 60Hz signal. They can't even accept a true 120Hz input. So it's basically a gimmick. Save your money and go with a better 60Hz 1080p display.
 
I just remembered something else about Samsung anyways, avoid any of the 300 or 400 series as they are not as good as the 500 or 600 series. Personally i am very happy with my 500 series samsung as it is a great product and well the only thing the 600 series had was 120Hz

Okay,

Bestbuy has the LN40B540 for 750$ on sale right now, and FS has the LN50B550 for 799$. I tried to compared both on samsung website and the difference seems to be the remote ?

Both models are not available in store according the their websites :(
