We've been hearing about and anticipating new Intel's Cherryville SSDs for some time now they are finally being released in the guise of the 520 series. They are built around the same SandForce SF2281 controller we have come to know from numerous other SSDs but Intel has taken it upon themselves to equip these drives with a custom firmware and high end NAND. But is this enough to set the 520 series apart from in a cluttered market?

Dang namit.. Just when I bought the performance pro. :(

May consider sending it back for a trade on this.. DAMN impressive software to bring the disk back from dirty the way it does.
5 yr warranty and only slightly more bucks than the performance pro... hmm decisions.
 
I've also been waiting for those. I would buy a 120Gb to become OS and some games, then my current filled up 120Gb 510 series would be used for games only.

OR

I could sell my 510 series and get a single 240Gb 520.

I want prices ! :haha:
 
Nice review Akg, that's quite the SSD there.

I am curious to see if we'll see even better performance from previous, current and next gen SSDs with Windows 8s "new" format/file management system.
 
Great review. Is it safe to assume that the 120GB version would perform similarly compared to other 120GB drives?

The review has been updated. Some of the pages were older versions. Totally my mistake.
 
Hmmm, this could easily become the go to drive for us here at work.

Now I wonder though, could they not come out with another one that uses toggle mode NAND? Or is that not a possibility? And if it is, would that not completely dominate?
 
Thanks guys. This drive IS the "go to" drive of this generation. Bar none.

I truly doubt Intel will ever use anything but their own ONFi NAND...as they have complete control over the product....whereas with Toggle Mode NAND they would not and be at the whims of the market and another company. The minor performance hit is more than made up with increased reliability.

YMMV but I think this is not only the best SSD Intel has made but the best SF2281 drive ever created. It has impressed me like no other SF drive.
