Microphone cutting in and out

Hey folks;
On my Dell Inspiron 7779 laptop I have an odd microphone issue. Using the default microphone (Realtek onboard audio) the audio recordings cut in and out...clear as a bell for a couple of seconds, then gets muffled for a few seconds, then clear again, etc. If I use the microphone on my Logitech usb headset it is fine.

Tried the following:
1. Uninstall and update the drivers
2. Tried multiple pieces of software (Windows Voice recorder, Snagit, etc and symptoms the same)
3. Tried another microphone (Logitech headset mic over usb) and that one works.
4. Ran the Windows troubleshooters, etc.
5. Tried turning off usb power saving (saw that offered a sa solution elsewhere on the net).

Any suggestions or something obvious?

Thanks!

this your laptop 7779 2in1

realtek driver 6.0.1.8158 ,A08
Last Updated: 31 May 2017

I also see bios update aug 2017 Updated Computrace BIOS persistence module.
- Enhance the compatibility for Dell Universal Dock - D6000.

if sound craps out now then again means CPU is choked

Installed that driver and bios this am.

Interesting about the cpu...any reason why one mic would work fine but not the other?

you talking the built-in mic or 1/8 plug in

if the built-in one may have some dirt lodged in port hole of mic

I've found on several laptops for whatever reason the official sound card drivers (and mic, and touchpad for that matter) dont work, but the laptop 'stock' driver version will.

I'd try to roll it back or find an older (if not origonal) driver that your laptop came with and see if it works. Personal ancedote: This happened with my old Asus ultrabook, and my wifes Lenovo.
