Microsoft announces Windows 10

So far so good. It did an install from updates without any issues that I can see (other than a mem address not accessible error at shutdown that's persisted through several builds).

Believe it or not, there's a couple of positives right off the bat! :)

First and foremost, they've fixed the issue where P2P update options defaulted to "on for all" and wouldn't stay stuck at off on reboot. That was a huge issue for me and one of the main reasons I wasn't willing to leave the TP test PC on daily for testing purposes.

Second up is the fact that WMP now plays Flac files natively. There was some mention of native flac playback in one of the blogs, but without further info it sounded to me more like it was only going to be offered through the metro music app.

Native Flac playback doesn't sound like a huge deal since most folks who will use flac will probably have a preferred third party program for music playback, but it's at the very least a tangible improvement over win7.

edit:

Completely subjective (without benchmarks to back it up) but file and disk access/manipulation speeds seem to have improved. Disk cleanup is no longer brutally slow.

There's a new metro app called the network beta... doesn't do anything ATM, but if we're lucky it might be a single source app for internal network sharing/syncing. Imagine if you could easily sync files and folders as well as pairing up different devices as backup partners.

That's the kind of value added functionality that might make migrating to windows 10 worthwhile.

Maybe I missed it somewhere in this thread but I take it old Windows Technet licenses don't quality? Secondly, would I be able to use Dell OEM Window 7 licenses to get Windows 10? I wouldn't mind at least a few free installs :)

My Lenovo OEM license on my Thinkpad received the upgrade notice. My laptop came with win7 but I activated using the slic because it was easier.

Do they legally qualify? Probably not as they're not supposed to be used on production PCs. OTOH I believe they're seen by the system as regular retail versions so not only do I suspect they'll work, retail version rights should transfer to win10 thus removing any issues over changing hardware in the future.

As far as the Dell OEM licenses go... Manufacturer's keys are strongly tied to the hardware so you'd have no problems upgrading on the original hardware but I doubt just the key would get you a win 10 license to use on different hardware.

Haven't seen any version of win 7 that doesn't get the pop up to upgrade yet. Pretty sure I will go for it on my desktop once I get all my photos backed up...just in case. Don't think I will bother on my laptops.

So far the only version I have seen not get the pop up to upgrade is enterprise. Oh and one thing that I really hate about the popup is that you can't hide it. Well you can pick customize and select hide icon and notifications. But it comes back and shows itself every time you reboot, and that in your face crap is what is pissing me off.

The popups were included with one or more specific updates through Windows Update. You should be able to uninstall it once identified.

Looks like it came in the last time I did updates on the 22nd. The update in question is KB3035583.

What bothers me the most is that once you hide it, it shouldn't come back. It's like an "important" update to the operating system being used as a NAG pushing their product.

Not sure if it's related to Windows 10 or not but my Win 8.1 PC keeps saying there is an update it needs to do if I restart the computer, does 'something' but the next time I have the option to shut down/restart the same damn 'windows has an update' for update and restart pops up...

I am thinking of reinstalling win 10 again, this time will go from zero with the USB stick method. I want to see how DX12 will go on my GTX 960.
