Work in progress Muzzle Flash III: White Death

Well, the next major part of this case mod is in ... custom cut and beveled tempered glass. :punk:

As always, ADM Glass packs your order well so it can survive a trip across the country.

And the cut and fit is PERFECT.

I may not even put the white felt in the corners. There is no rocking at all, and I sort of like seeing the black screws for some reasons. Oh well, I'll cut them and see how they look ... later.

The more I look at the top, the more I love it. While it does have a hint of greenish tint to it, it still allows the white to show through nicely. I'm also really digging the corners without the felt. So much so that I am giving serious consideration of ordering another piece of beveled glass that is 17 9/16" by 23 9/16" and figuring out a way to hold it on the side and just allow the whole side of the case to be visible.

The most obvious idea is to see if ADM Glass can put four holes in the glass, one in each corner, about 1" off each edge, and try to come up with a way to have a large thumb screw go through it and maybe then build four brackets that would then pick up the hole (I can't push the hole further out and into the bevel to grab the existing metal). Like this ...

I'm not sure I would like the look of that though. I like the totally clean look of a solid piece of glass with no giant screws going through it.

I could easily get some 'L' channel aluminum (painted white) and put 2 holes through it to pick up the existing holes that are used to hold the side panel on (located on the back of the chassis). Maybe I could do the same sort of thing along the entire bottom of the chassis and make a little ledge that could trap the glass along the bottom. Both together would hold the glass in from the back and bottom, and hopefully the upper front corner wouldn't "pop out".

Anyone got any other ideas? I'm all ears.

(Edit)

Well, so much for the 4 holes in the corner idea. ADM Glass just got back to me and they can't drill holes that close to the edge without serious risk of breaking.

Well, regardless of what the method of holding the glass will be, the side panel glass is now on order. Hopefully in a week or so it should be in my grubby hands.

Like before, here is a copy of my order, in case someone else wants to know exactly the measurements/details for this mod done and do it themselves.

I swear, I'm fast approaching the cost of the entire case just with the "mods".

I'd personally hate big bolts larking off the thin bezel around the window, so I'd rather go with L-shape clamps, as you said before. On another note, I've seen mnpctech to use a small screw with a washer to hold the acrylic which they made for Phanteks Enthoo Pro and Luxe. I guess this is the one.... I'm not sure how'd that look with tempered glass, or how you would screw down the screw on the corners, but from a rough guess, I think you can drill a small hole at the corner aluminium piece and screw down a good-looking screw with a good looking washer.

This is where the drilling should be...

And here's a nice match (upto only M5 screw though)...
Premium Glossy Aluminum Alloy Countersunk Washer - Silver by ModDIY (Silver color)

About the drilling though, I think a small hole wouldn't be too risky a task. And I've heard that tempered glasses are 2x more stronger than normal glass (although I may be damn wrong on this). Maybe a hand driller would help?

Or how about (white coloured) glue pads at the four corners? That might be kinda close to being "ghetto" :bleh:

How about a u-channel on the bottom for the glass to sit in? And make a couple small retaining tabs out of acrylic or painted aluminum for the top?

Keep the ideas coming. I got a week before the glass gets here. Hopefully one will work.

Oh, and on the subject of glass ...

While I went with "clear" tempered glass, as I said before, there is a slight greenish hue to it. You CAN get tempered glass that is pretty much totally clear, it is called "Low Iron" glass, but it is more than double the cost. The $60 side panel would have been $140 if I went with "low iron" and beveled. Of course, having the glass beveled triples the price as well. If I wend with just regular, non-beveled, tempered glass, that $60 panel would only have cost $24. Of course, low iron, non-beveled, is still pretty damn high at $104 for the glass.

So while the "low iron" may have been the best choice, it would have added about $280+ shipping to the cost of the build.

Well, just a little bit of modding before I call it a night. Back on page 2, I had a shot of the Aquaero 6XT controller, and after looking at it, I could see that after a bit of use, dust got in between the LCD display and the touchscreen and you could REALLY see the spots of dust when it was on. Well, being the anal modder that I am, I had to come up with a way that the factory didn't do/think of.

So here is the before ...

And here is the after ...

And how does one accomplish such a feat? Why with $2.33 worth of this ...

That's right, with just a little black 3/16" tall by 3/8" wide (cut in half) foam between the front panel and the LCD will keep dust out of there forever. Of course now that I got 10 feet of the stuff, I think I can do about 30 Aquaero 6XT's with all the foam I have left over.

Here is the top view with the "foam sandwich" ...

Maybe this weekend I'll play around with this stuff ...

The "Farbwerk" 4 channel RGB LED controller from Aquacomputer (which will be controlled by the Aquaero 6XT). Most likely I'll mount it in the "dog house" and figure out where to run the LED strips to give the best light.

For those who haven't seen this thing in action, here is a video on it ...
