New Build - Review Request

1. If going this expensive, Intel will likely be faster (though at a power cost), and potentially allow for another CPU upgrade after raptor lake, while AM4 is done (I am sure you already know).

3. I would personally recommend a case that has front airflow over the solid panel, but if you are ok with the reduced airflow it is a good case.

Hi,

Sorry, I do not know anything about point #1, would you please eludidate me.

Which case are you recommending? Do you have a link?

Thanks,

CG

The 5950X is the best CPU that will be released on the AM4 socket (no more drop in upgrades). AMD is switching to the AM5 socket and likely DDR5 only with the next CPU release (expected this fall).

It is believed that Intel's next gen CPUs (Raptor Lake) will be drop in compatible with current motherboards. So while I usually recommend AMD because it offers cheaper motherboards with DDR4, it seems your budget would allow an intel setup that would allow you to drop in upgrade the CPU in a year or 2 if you wanted.

Your build is great as is, but you could consider a 12900K (generally faster single threaded/games, comparable in multithreaded, but uses more power), RAM of your choice (DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the MOB you pick), and the Z690 motherboard of your choice.

For the case I would need more info to make informed recommendations. Mid tower/full tower/RGB/window/any specific requirements outside fitting your build parts? Off hand fractal has a slew of different sized Meshify or Torrent cases, Corsair 4000D or 5000D airflow, phanteks P400A or P500A. A case is a very personal choice though. My recommendation is just to go to something that doesn't choke off the front intake fans.

If you got the cash then why not go for an Intel i9-12900K with a decent board? I question Intel's drop in upgrade path since at most it's for 1 more generation unlike AMD which span across 3 or 4 generations. Not sure how big of an issue this is but I seen some GN review videos where they mentioned thread handling issues with Intel 12th gen in Win 10 and Win 11. For sure Win 10 can't be used with 12th gen CPU without disabling the E-Cores.

Yeah, there isnt really going to be a consensus here. Price, a possible upgrade path requirement, DDR4 vs 5, performance, workload; We're at a point in time where the options arnt clear and your choice should depend on those factors. Its really tough to get enough info to clearly say what you should go with for 100% optimization.

At the end of the day, assuming NO other personal factors are considered, the 12900 (on windows 11) is a top tier choice.

Hi fellows,

Alright, I agree with your suggestions. I have done some research on my own now and it supports your suggestion for an Intel i9-12900K on Win 11. If I am going to get this rig, I am going to buy DDR5 - 4800.

I would appreciate your input on a good mobo. To narrow it down I am looking at these three:

* ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero C$850

* ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Formula C$1,384

* ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Extreme C$1,531

I used the "compare" function at NewEgg.ca and they all seem to have the same or very similar features. The main difference a Techno-Layman like myself sees is the significant price variance! What am I missing here??

I could certainly use your input on which one to get!

Thank you in advance,

CG :)

Unless you hate money I wouldn't offer myself to be Intel's Guinea pig on their platforms.
AM4 is a mature and stable platform, with the bugs worked out. You want stability not headaches.

5950x all the way, no more doubts.
4TB single nvme drive for boot ? Hmm, no. You have VROC support, get yourself a card with 4 nvme slots on it, get 4 x 1TB drives , slam them on the card and enjoy super duper transfer rates for game loading or whatever you do on that system.
Oh, and case, yes I would go on something with perforated front, FD is always a solid choice

funny. thats how i feel about amd.

I know for a fact Redhat doesn't support Intel's new tech properly. Things that should run in e-cores end up in the p-cores and visa versa. With no fix in sight I had to abandon the 12xxx gen and go with a 10xxx instead.

For me I see this like thier attempt at the rambus thing that was completely abandoned not long after. I'd hate to see the same thing happen to the current gen of Intel's CPUs.

Personally, if I was in the OP's position I'd either wait for AMDs next iteration or go with the 5950, which is a fantastic system.
