New KB time (again?) - 2026 edition

Yeah Amazon is most likely, but I dont mind ordering direct if it doesn't cost much more or take weeks to ship. The amzn return policy - which I hopefully wont need to use - is also a boon (see above re: my pain in returning direct to Razer, ugh).

Yeah I've never heard of banana switches before (they're called banana, not yellow?), but at least the V1 is hot swappable, so I can stick anything in there with ease, just gotta know which ones to buy.

Should I maybe grab one of those sample kits of different keys? Dont know
MX 24 sample switches

Edit: hey hey now, is a modified going through my posts and swapping the word banana with the old banana emoticon? Lol...

Edit2: ba-na-na

Edit3: @sswilson can write that word, but mine get replaced... so I am being trolled? Banana

Keychron's switches are proprietary, but afaik the colour code equates to industry standard so the ba-na-na ones will be close to a standard yellow. Looks like the yellows from their site would ship from China, but shipping from china is actually pretty decent these days (usually under 2 weeks).

When I was first looking into mechanical keyboards I considered one of those switch samplers but was convinced that they really don't help much. (Those are kalih as well which are pretty much bottom of the barrel for known brands).

Do you know what switch was in your previous keyboard?

I personally find reds too light, with yellows being my happy space for basic switches. Everybody's preference is different though.

I like light, linear switches. Low force, short travel. Basically, fast + easy (less pain) + quiet.

I thought I linked a sampler of MX switches? Are those not the standard still? Also, the Amazon page for the V1 says it supports both 3pin and 5pin mx switches? Maybe I linked the wrong one.

Also, testing: banan-a, bana-na, banana

If you like light switches then the reds on the amazon version might be right up your alley.

Kalihs are a brand of MX compatible switches, just on the lower end of the spectrum. MX switches come in both 3 or 5 pin versions and a keyboard which supports 5 pin also supports 3 pin. (The extra pins aren't electrical contacts, they're an extra couple of plastic pins over and above the large center plastic hub).

edit: If you find the included reds don't have a short enough throw, then you might want to look at some form of "speed" switch to replace them with.

I just noticed the amazon.ca kb is translucent as opposed to straight black. I'm personally not a fan, but that's up to you. (The .ca website kbs are black, but will ship from china warehouse).

edit: The .ca site is also coming up with a $15 off for signing up overlay if that helps with pricing.

Have you ever tried brown switches? I prefer them over yellow and red. Or "speed" silvers would be my other suggestion for a light switch to try.

Ive tried like NO switches at all, haha.
That's why I was thinking of one of those sample things, a bunch of different switches all together to test the feel, sound, etc.

I'll throw my vote in for browns too. I like them the best. I've had several keyboards now including my current and I've been happiest with browns for getting that mechanical typing difference without it being overly tactile or clicky (aka loud).

The only other option I've really liked are the Asus ones, I believe the NX Snows on that Strix Scope II 96 that I have. Not 100% sure, could also have been the NX Storm switches as it comes with either but I don't believe it is the Storm clicky ones.

Anyway, as I've said before I thought that was going to be my forever keyboard but I just couldn't make the layout work for me. Still have it though.

That's the thing, I just dont know? That's why I thought a sampler thing would be a good idea. I dont want to have to buy and return and buy again, nor do I want to go into a CC and touch a nasty display keyboard that's got covid on it.

Is there a GOOD sampler out there? With good switches all around so I can pick quality ones?

Also, testing: banana

Another vote for browns. I don't mind reds/blacks, but browns having that tactile 'step' make typing a lot more intuitive and reduce the number of errors you'd have vs reds/blacks, espescially if you're typing fast and don't want to bottom out all the time.
