does the transfer from fah really affect the link that much?

It's pretty unbelievable how hard starting an upload hits my DSL (6Mb/0.64Mb). When the bigadv servers were down at the start of the week I was trying some uploads without the limit and as soon as I'd start an upload two family members would yell at my about "who broke the internet" and "what are you downloading?". Web page loads seem to stall sometimes and if it does work there is normally a 5-10 second wait if the client is uploading with full bandwidth.

Generally on internet modems/switches, when you go max upload - the ability to download stalls. At my house, I have 40/1 through Eastlink. With my folding rigs, when they upload at 100-120KB/s (the max upload at my house) I'm not able view webpages, etc.
I limit the upload speed on my folding boxes at home, and at work to 80KB/s as not to mess with regular everyday internet usage.

I can't wait for Bell FiberOp.. 70/70 is going to rule. Now all I have to do is move to be able to get it.. :(
