for an on-board raid controller, that does not look out of the ordinary

If you have a UPS, enable write caching for a performance boost.
If you're transferring through your LAN and seeing the speeds capped, disable MMCSS.

thanks guys .. ill give a try at thoses suggestions after work

40-60MB/s seems about right if your referring to writing files to the RAID5. Intel onboard RAID isn't true hardware RAID. Personally, I'd only use onboard RAID for the simple ones (0, 1, 10). The rest should be run on a proper RAID controller if you want performance.

If your read speeds are that low though, then you have a problem.

Yep, i am running this raid setup with the onboard intel chip.

If i still have problems after i've done the things that Zoob told me, im gonna buy a real raid card next week.

Mmcss is multimedia class scheduler service.

It will reserve a percentage of bandwidth to try and prevent streaming media from buffering due to maxed out connection, usually resulting in a lower throughput speed if you want to copy large files across your network.

Ran into this annoyance back with vista. It might be improved in 7.
Would kick on if you had anything that made use of your audio - even Winamp playing local media would enable it since it is tied to audiosrv I think.

Again I think it's massively improved in win7 vs vista since I haven't experienced this issue in a while.
