i am currently running my setup on air cpu/gpu.i live on the 4th floor of an apartment building with no ac and my system is running extremely hot right now do to it being like 90 degrees or more even at night. should i underclock a little to be safe or should i just go down to stock for the rest of the summer. i dont want to damage any of my hardware as its basically oced to the limits of my config . any idea if a slight notch down would suffice or better of just going stock would for the rest of the summer. i would consider watercooling but i'm to much of a pussy to attempt this on my own. thanks all

Well if your ambient temperature is 90°F, thats definitely not going to help things, but you can still run an overclock depending on the temperatures you are getting. It really just depends on how good your air-cooling is and what temperatures you find acceptable.

For CPU's if you are using an Intel, the overall consensus, and typically the advertised safe thermal level is 70°C. Obviously this can very a little between different models, but that seems to be about what most chips can do. To be honest I have no idea what the safe temps are for AMD chips anymore, as I haven't used one in years, google is your friend here. If you are seeing temps at or above this though, I would suggest moving down to stock speed, seeing if that gets you in a decent temperature spot, if it does great, if not, underclock.

As for GPU's, most modern GPU's have a safe operating level at around 100°C. So technically if you really wanted to, you should be able to run them that hot, from what I have heard the 290x's are running in the 90's right out of the box. I personally don't like running them that hot though I typically try to shoot for the 70-75°C range on air. So its really up to you, but just as with the CPU's if you are under your desired temp, keep it there, if you are above it, slowly notch it down until you are.

I meant to respond to this when it first came up, but I was on my tablet and wanted to wait until I had a keyboard handy... :)

I don't typically run max OCs any more, but when I did it was pretty much standard for me to drop the OC down a notch during the hot summer months, although it wasn't so much about core temp as it was about the chipset temps. Higher ambient temps seemed to cause OC instability which I put down to higher overall chipset temps.

thanks for the replys. i just went down to stock settings for the rest of the summer. to much heat.

I wouldn't run consistently that hot. At stock freq you can likely drop voltage down a bunch to lower temps. I run my 3570k at -0.15v offset, but at 4.1 ghz and it's cooler than running fully stock settings.

you can always get MSI afterburner to monitor your temps
theres also some gadgets you can find if you google around (win 7) that can tell you your CPU and GPU temp and load.
