Rants etc.....

My trusty ol' Samsung ML-2851ND duplex laser printer has started making a noise (similar to fan blades hitting a misplaced cable) that really sounds like it's coming from a high speed internal roller of some form.... found the maintenance manual and did a quick 1'st level tear down without finding anything obvious..... Might last forever, might last a few more prints... but the noise during high speed wind down is going to drive me nuts if I don't either find the issue or replace the printer. :)

I don't print off a ton of stuff, but I've been really happy with this printer considering I've had it for 6+ years. Gonna have to start keeping my eyes out for a duplex printer on sale again (apparently not samsung either since they just sold the business).

edit:

Might not be so hard to replace after all....

Brother HL-L2320D 30PPM 250-SHEET Capacity Tray AUTO-DUPLEX Monochrome Laser Printer - HLL2320D - NCIX.com

That looks an awful lot like the same model only brother branded. Replacement toner carts are decent as well.

edit 2: Crap... nope.... no bloody ethernet. :(

Heh.... it's a 6 yr old $150 printer.... I can't see me spending $200 to try to fix it. :)

Sounds like a flywheel with a bad bushing or that's gone slightly off center.

There are a couple of possible replacement printers out there sub $200, but they're both brothers and I'm not sure I'm all that keen on the idea that the drum is a separate unit. (Although... admittedly the knock-off toners are dirt cheap and a drum+toner package is around $50).

I went into budget because I knew my breaks were acting up emergency brake after I released it and drive in the rain the one brake would lock up when brake was pressed for the first little while when using the brakes , figured ok I will just take it in pay see what s going on fix it myself , I look at the brakes everything and wow I notice I need calipers rotors ground to many times drums same as rotor spring kit pads shoes brake cylinders both sides , the place I bought this 2004 ford ranger from last year just basically through on pads and shoes ( band aided the brakes) . I thought maybe 4-600 , 1700 and of course I have know place to do all of that work for hours I had to fork it out. grrr. next will be the clutch which will also be around 1000 because I cannot do that because this truck has a slave cylinder. I also went to change the oil yesterday and the moron that did the last oil change tighten the bolt so tight that I couldn't break it lose I have to get a longer wrench with some leverage and hope that I don't strip it. at least I should be ale to change the serpentine belt tomorrow.

Brother (DCP-L2540DW) Monochrome All-in-One Wireless Duplex Laser Printer | Staples®

Doesn't get much more convenient than a sale starting on the day after I start looking at replacement printers.... not gonna argue with a $100 replacement that includes an ADF with built-in manual 2 sided scanning and/or what looks to be scanning multiple pages to one.

It's louder while printing than the samsung was though.

edit: On the rant side of things.... c'mon folks!!!! If your product connects to a PC via cable(s) then include at least one of those types of cables in the box. I suppose Brother can be excused on this printer since it could connect wirelessly if I wanted it to, but it's still kinda irksome to find neither a USB nor a network cable included in the box.

Yeah, but you'll never go back.

I went through 3 samsung printers in 4 years. I've had my brother printer for 6 years now, and its still going strong on its 4th high yield toner. Workhorses man, workhorses.

Agreed. My brother has been fantastic. And pleasantly free of bloatware, unlike an HP......:angry2:

I've heard this from many different sources over the years, but my personal experience was just the opposite. It took 6 years and 7.5K prints for my cheapo samsung to start exhibiting problems.

I have however been using some form of brother MFC (inkjet) for well over 10 years and bought a new model a couple of years ago based on my experience with the first one I had.

edit: Here's a question.... does the drum unit just stop working once it reaches it's allotted print jobs? The one on this printer is rated for 12K and I know brother has been in the news recently WRT printer carts TXing based on page count rather than actual ink remaining....

So I get the following in my email basket this evening......

twitter.webp

Links displayed in the mouseover look legit, but there's absolutely no way I'm going to link through to reset my password.

Is it possible that a top tier company like twitter doesn't know better than to include links as opposed to directing folks to find their own way to the website and do a password reset from there?

I never use my twitter account, but I did just that in case it was legit and not a phishing attempt.

I had that happen too. Old account, terrible password, etc. Turns out I had a bunch of random people followed and some posts from my account, in what I assumed to be Hindi text. I have since changed the password and found a Chrome app that mass unfollows people.
