Just wondering if everyone's keeping up to date on Putin's harassment tactics lately? With an increase in bomber runs testing our Arctic borders, and a huge massing of Russian naval ships in the Arctic circle, you have to wonder when it goes beyond harassment and in to full fledged war threats. I get that he's trying to make a show of force and establish that he can't be muscled by Harper's constant badgering, but this could get ugly really fast. All said and done, I feel a little like South Korea at the moment... albeit with a significantly larger DMZ.

The bombers have been ducking in and out of our air space for years. From what I've been told, it usually coincides with Bear pilot graduations.

Canada has been taking a stronger approach to arctic sovereignty and warfare over the last few years as well. Nothing I'd start to worry about.

Stop watching, reading and listening to the news. Not like we have any say in politics on pretty much any level anyways.

It's been a regular occurrence for a long time, but it's been significantly escalated recently. Not to mention that the runs have been coming a lot closer.

My concern is Putin's haste to get his hands on possible oil deposits in the ever expanding arctic waterways. If he feels like a solid foothold in the arctic has a good chance of funding his ego-driven conquests, we could have a lot of trouble in the near future.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to be uninformed and uninvolved. My grandfather paid in blood for our rights and freedoms, and I truly believe that those freedoms are soon to be lost to us because of the current generation's complacency. We have as much a say in the political operation of this country as we choose to have. Unfortunately, a good chunk of citizens choose to have no say at all, but complain about the state of affairs regardless.

I will continue to stay informed, vote based on my beliefs, and try to do my best as an individual to maintain pride in this amazing country that we're lucky enough to call home.

China and Russia seem to be working together in the East for control of South China Sea as well. Some saber rattling moves from Russian planes when Obama was on his Asian trip.

They had this thing called the cold war decades ago, same shit, different munchkin, ignore it, and it will go away again.

I wouldn't necessarily completely ignore it, but I also wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Military saber rattling this close to US soil probably won't amount to much more than that... the US might not be all that interested in expending military muscle outside of N/A , but they're still the largest war machine on the planet by far and probably not interested in having putin on their doorstep.

As far as this being an old story... yeah, back in the '80s it was pretty common to scramble jets for bears coming over the horizon. What used to really irk us was the annual christmas sub they'd send up our way to test our readiness during the holiday season. :)

Its quite a regular occurance to hear the sonic boom's of the jets scrambling out of Cold Lake and flying over the oilsands on their way up to the Arctic for peek-a-boo.

I know someone near my home that is working for the Defense, i will try to get more infos on that next time i see him working outside his house.
