SourceForge grabs GIMP for Windows? account, wraps installer in bundle-pushing adware [Updated] | Ars Technica

SourceForge, the code repository site owned by Slashdot Media, has apparently seized control of the account hosting GIMP for Windows on the service, according to e-mails and discussions amongst members of the GIMP community—locking out GIMP's lead Windows developer. And now anyone downloading the Windows version of the open source image editing tool from SourceForge gets the software wrapped in an installer replete with advertisements.

Seriously? These guys used to be one of my main trusted links when searching for opensource software, after seeing this they're moved over to the "never trust" column.

I get my free adware software from ninite.com

Do you normally look for free adware software? I find I don't need to look very hard these days. :)

Now adware free software is a different story. :)

edit: Hrmmmmm...... in hindsight, there's a good chance that this might be one of those francophone translation to english situations as opposed to a mispost I can light heartedly poke fun at. If that's the case then my comment was out of line, and as such I'd offer my apologies especially since any translation from french to english here is undoubtedly 100 times better than any translation I'd be able to make the other way.

I was trying to download PDFCreator from Sourceforge today and both Firefox and Chrome blocked it as malicious. Did some research and apparently it installs adware without intervention and has done so in some iteration since at least 2009.

Surprise surprise, this application was from (PDFForge) Sourceforge guys. Looks like they are expanding their business.

Really? I'm surprised SourceForge would do this. I don't even know if there's an equivalent to SourceForge for open-source software.

Some comments have suggested github, but a quick look at that suggests it's not the easiest to navigate. :)

I get the feeling this is a symptom of a larger problem where the free trusted sites/services we grew up with have/are been/being bought up and the new owners are attempting to monetise them.

It really is getting harder to find software that hasn't padded it's installers. There used to be a few programs that I'd always install after a new build or a Windows reinstall that I'd just breeze through the installers. Not anymore, now I check everything and take a look at every 'custom install' and 'options' tab just to look for crap they're trying to sneak it.

It's sad really.

Then there's download sites that require you to get their 'installer' like Cnet etc. Ugggghhh
