I have a senario here where i use my xbox 360 on my monitor, right now i am using line in on my computer to get stereo sound .

i want to get optical out from the xbox 5.1 into my spdif in header of my motherboard and was wondering if i can passthrough the 5.1 to my speakers using the 3 cables for front centre and rear.

would i get my 5.1 sound or it is going to passthrough only as stereo?

60 to computer optical, then analog output from computer to speakers should work if you got that adapter you are talking about

It should be possible as the sound processing would be done all by the sound card, the only thing i am not sure of is if you would get any noticable sound delay (you shouldn't but its possible)

Another option for you if your budget allows, is to buy a half decent sound card with both spdif in/out. Who knows what kind of sound you'll get with onboard audio.
