Star Citizen

That's still not enough. Sorry. My interest for this game waned about 6 months ago and has completely evaporated in the face of the awesomeness that is the evolving world of Elite: Dangerous.

Funny how one company can get so many things right with a basic launch followed by a holistic add-on approach. Meanwhile the other, with a budget several TIMES as much, is perfectly happy to let feature creep intrude into what was a comparatively simple initial concept.

All 85,632,288 $ and 936,952 backers worth of it.

Yeah. It's depressing for us first-run backers.

I also think you just highlighted why there's been rumblings of an independent audit being started by a group of backers. Barring that, there's already talk of getting the FTC involved if things keep progressing the way they are.

If anything, this project proves why legally speaking, community-funded projects need more oversight for their investors.

Backing started in 2012. That's 3 years ago. Take a game like Diablo 3 for exemple. Production on the game started in 2008. The game was released may 15 2012. That's 4 years of development for a game that's no where near the scope of Star Citizen by a studio that is funded by one of the biggest gaming corporation on the planet. Honestly I don't expect this game to be completed to an acceptable level for the masses until 2017. Is 5 years to development an AAA title this big too much ? You have to remember that this is not another Call of Duty or Battlefield. Everything in this game is built from the ground up.

As it stands right now they have over 10 studios working in conjunction with CIG and close to 500 employees. The new studio they opened in Germany earlier this year is basically all old Crytek developers. I'm really not concerned.

The original Kickstarter launched in October 2012. There was supposed to be an 18 month timeframe for shipment of the game. Now we're 36 months in with probably another 18 to go. This is the feature creep, all the extra shit they've added taking far longer than originally planned. Remember they had a working demo when they launched the fundraising campaign. The $30 I backed it for doesn't really mean a lot to me, but there's people who've plunked down hundreds of dollars understandably getting a little pissed off.

Except you're not investors. It's pretty explicit that kickstarting isn't an investment in any form. A type of pre-buy/ pre-order/ etc. sure, but there's no way it'd ever be viewed as an investment.

That being said, better oversight certainly would be a good idea. Kickstarter itself has had a few starters that have turned out to be total messes. Considering they're profiting off the situation, I'm surprised they're not stepping up more to keep people from starting to really shy away in big numbers.

As for Star Citizen, I kind of got a 'overpromised' vibe early on and it seemed like the team was aiming for the moon more and more from what I heard of it. Then seeing the massive dollars getting dumped into it made me a little more worried. I've been pretty lucky that the few projects I've KS'd have all worked out fine (POE, Dreamfall, Shadowrun, probably a few others) with the exception of Hero-U which I suspect will never see the light of day (which I thought about at the start so I donated the bare minimum to get the game).

Hopefully they get things turned around and all the backers aren't stuck with a mid-beta mess of things. Maybe a management shakeup and a project lead/director change to help them narrow their focus.

Personally, I don't think that's viable. I think what's viable is for the end user to accept the risk associated with purchases of this nature and to hope for the best.

The crowd funding of vapor projects is risky by its nature. The safe option is the finished, vetted game available for download now.

I put my money where my mouth is. While the concept of SC is extremely compelling to me, I decided it was not worth the very apparent risk.

You are mixing up a purchase with a PLEDGE. There's a big difference there.
