The AMD RX 580 8GB Performance Review Comment Thread

SKYmtl may I ask why this review does not have the comparative summary for the cards tested per the resolutions used? I really appreciate seeing those simple charts. It sure is handy to point people to your review(s) and say "see, he shows 31% between them at 1440P" or something like that. In the past your reviews have shown these overall results and I am hoping to see them again. Thank you

Sorry, there was no time for it in this review.

It's a step in the right direction for GPUs, but not really generational IMO (though that is not new news). I know they like to have a new gen each year, but to me these are basically RX 475 and 485. I am very happy to see they are implementing more memory clock states, as it has bugged me for a while.

Is Vega ever going to see the light of day?

It is a 480 with slightly higher clocks and substantially higher power usage compared to the performance increase over the 480. I know Sky is beyond excited about the 580 but I am not. It is a re badge using slightly better silicon. AMD or Nvidia it does not matter. IF either one does such a crap re badge job without significant reduction in power consumption, significant performance increase OR reduction in price I think they should be ridiculed NOT praised...

On a side I think someone should take a 1060 and give is the "580" treatment. That would mean overclock it to the limits of the silicon and then OC the 1060 memory +500 and then lets see where the difference lies. I am serious, I do not know, would the 1060 use that much more power compared to the 580 to 480 I do not know. Would the 1060 still lag behind I do not know. Something tells me it would be a tight race.

Title is misleading "the best just got better" ? You mean best house heater lol. In warm climate countries no one is even gonna bother with rx 580 with that power consumption number

I think it was a good review, though I agree with Coach that the summary charts are always an outstanding feature in Sky/HWC reviews but realistically we all have calculators haha.

The power consumption is high, but on the other hand the old RX 480, even if massively over volted didn't generally overclock past 1.4Ghz anyway, so this is definitely a step in the right direction. And as users get these things into their hands they may find that they could undervolt the cards, something that was fairly common with the R9 Fury cards as well. This might keep good performance and bring down power consumption. I have an RX 470 8GB from MSI water cooled that has very little trouble reaching 1.4Ghz but I prefer not to max out voltage on the card, so I run it about 50mhz above stock at default power usage.

Unfortunately the state of the market over the past 5-6 years has been that it really hasn't mattered how good AMD GPU products were, they get roundly trounced by nVidia in terms of sales which means that for AMD to stop the bleeding, they need to find ways to make profit outside of enthusiast GPU sales, which apparently are not really a very large part of revenues.

I think overall it's a decent GPU for the mid-tier market, and I much prefer it to what I feel is a purely gimped GTX 1060.

Hmm. With this refresh I am curious if they have abandoned x90 cards entirely (Example - 490, 590) in lieu of further Vega SKU offerings, or if Polaris just isn't suited for cards that perform at that tier.

Perhaps a bit of both.
