The NVIDIA GTX 1080 Review - Comment Thread

Going to hobble along with my outdated slow and worthless 980Ti for another year unless I run into a truckload of free money or free 1080s.

I'm just waiting for the 1060 announcement. I'm using a 7870 and although performance wise it does everything I need, I want a quieter and cooler card. Was looking at the 960 but at this point I'd rather wait.

These cards seem pretty amazing, but I did expect the gains with the new manufacturing node. I wonder how it's going to play out with AMD starting low to upper mid range and Nvidia starting at the upper mid to top end cards.

You may very well be able to stick with AMD with Polaris based GPUs as I fully expect them to top out around 1060-1070 performance at first....we will see.

From the article:

Indeed, the last time anyone saw this kind of generational shift was when Fermi was initially launched to replace the respected GTX 7900 series.

What’s been accomplished here is a generational performance shift of a size not seen since Fermi launched and ushered in the DX10+ age.

Fermi? You mean the Tesla architecture that came with the 8 series and continued up to 300 series.

Fermi started with 400 series and introduced DX11 support.

This is what happens when I'm too tired while writing...

SKYMTL, are you planning on giving us a heads up in this thread when the Fast Sync/HDR review page goes from "under construction" to "filled with detailed goodness" or should I just keep trolling the article? As I mentioned I'm really interested in the Fast Sync info.

Will my i5 2500K at 4.2 ghz be able to run the GTX 1080 with out bottlenecking it and wonder what performance hit I could expect?

I say overclock it to at least 4.8Ghz and/or upgrade resolution to 1440p. Helps reduce cpu bottleneck.

TONIGHT is when I should receive answers to my questions.
