discussion VOIP provider in Vancouver?

I'm thinking about moving from shaw digital phone ($20/mo) to a $10/mo VOIP provider. Does anyone have a provider they can recommend?

Skype? You can get unlimited Canada/US calls to landline and mobiles for 2.99/mth. Can't remember how much it is to setup an "online number". Make the most of Skype - free internet calls and great value calls

I'm pretty sure that VOIP isn't location sensitive.... doesn't matter who you get it from so long as you've got a good broadband connection.

Isn't skype through your computer only? I don't want to have to have my computer on 24/7 just to receive calls. I'd prefer a local business if possible so I have somewhere to go physically if things don't go my way and I want to throw a tantrum

I would look into company like acanac or other ISP for that.

Thanks but Acanac bills *yearly* so that's not very attractive. And you have to pay up front! If it turns out their service is crap then you are stuck for quite a while.

Two big ones would be vonage or primus, but either one of those services is going to cost you as much as your current Shaw digital phone....

Don't use magicjack. Here's why:

After boingboing posted that on their website, magicjack sued them for deformation -- the case was dismissed by the courts.

Vonage, or skype as previously posted.
I know you can buy special Skype recievers that you plug into a USB port and you can plug any phone into it and use it like on a landline.
And setting up a phone number is $26 i think, but stupidly enough they don't have canadian numbers... but i've used skype, it's worth it.
