I'm thinking about moving from shaw digital phone ($20/mo) to a $10/mo VOIP provider. Does anyone have a provider they can recommend?

I'm pretty sure that VOIP isn't location sensitive.... doesn't matter who you get it from so long as you've got a good broadband connection.

Isn't skype through your computer only? I don't want to have to have my computer on 24/7 just to receive calls. I'd prefer a local business if possible so I have somewhere to go physically if things don't go my way and I want to throw a tantrum

Thanks but Acanac bills *yearly* so that's not very attractive. And you have to pay up front! If it turns out their service is crap then you are stuck for quite a while.

Don't use magicjack. Here's why:

Magic Jack EULA said:
"You also understand and agree that use of the magicJack device and Software will include advertisements and that these advertisements are necessary for the magicJack device to work ... Our computers may analyze the phone numbers you call in order to improve the relevance of the ads" ...
Any claims, legal proceeding or litigation arising in connection with the magicJack device or Software will be resolved by binding arbitration ... in Palm Beach, Florida." (MagicJack's EULA says it will spy on you and force you into arbitration | Boing Boing Gadgets)

After boingboing posted that on their website, magicjack sued them for deformation -- the case was dismissed by the courts.

Vonage, or skype as previously posted.
I know you can buy special Skype recievers that you plug into a USB port and you can plug any phone into it and use it like on a landline.
And setting up a phone number is $26 i think, but stupidly enough they don't have canadian numbers... but i've used skype, it's worth it.
