If you plan on using more than two NVMe drives... yup HEDT is the place to be.

Get a couple AIC form-factored NVMe's if you plan on only using a single GPU. Their cooling potential is MUCH better than M.2. Then use M.2s as secondary storage.
 
JD: if you don't care about looks, and you can live with not-Samsung performance, look into Intels 600p / 6000p drives. I have a 1TB one, and it was HALF the price of a 1TB Samsung, but it's *only* 1700 read / 600 write, if that matters to you.
 
Yeah the 600p series is too slow to warrant NVMe IMO. The WD Blacks top out at 1TB, but that is an option since it's $100 less than a 970 EVO and performs pretty similar while being way more efficient.

Maybe it's best to hold out for Intel to release Skylake-X as well, but I'm not sure I want to be part of all these rushed Intel products.
