Q&A with Psyko Audio Labs @ HWC. Your Questions Answered

Because of how the headphones are designed to create 5.1 surround sound, and for each channel there is use of guide vanes to transfer the sound, what is the frequency response of these headphones. Not at the speaker itself, but at the ear location. I assume that because of the price of the headphones, you've used some very decent drivers. I ask because I'm thinking these is probably some type of feedback and/or volume loss happening in this setup. I understand that the guide vanes are quite short, but you say that they tubes have been engineered in such a way to produce that 0.5 ms of delay. Would that have an effect on the frequency response?

What is the impedance of these headphones?

Is the sound clean, and not mellowed? Another reason I ask because of the architecture of these phones.

So what you are really saying is that you are really providing 5.1, closer that anyone else...you've put the audio "sweetspot" at each ear...

But there's a sub in each ear? So is it really 5.2, or is the bass filtered by crossover from each channel and duplicated equally on each side?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let us know when these are available..I'm very eager to try 'em out.

Yes, we believe we are putting the listener in the "sweetspot" - with the correct timing, volume difference and front/rear sound flow.

Yes there is a sub in each ear. It is still 5.1 (not 5.2) because they are the same signal. The theory is that people can't tell the direction of the low frequencies but it is interesting to us to check out the effect of delivering the left lows to just the left and right subs to the right side - but that is a future project. If you have tested that effect and found it useful, let us know.

You can order them on our web site Psyko Audio Labs, Psyko 5.1 PC Gaming Headphones - Home now. Today's orders are slated for May delivery.

We will also be showing them off at the Game Developer Conference (GDC) San Francisco Mar 25-27, 2009. A couple of us Psykos are planning at being at VulcLAN Mar 13 (Vulcan, Alberta) so we'll be showing them off there too.

Sounds great!!

I already have a "7.2" set-up, with the left/right bass seperated into seperate subs, and "LFE effects" bridged between the two.

I run a Yamaha RX-V659 as well as a Yamaha 6180, and have found that while the 6180 already seperates left/right bass internally, I get a far more satisfactory sound using the RX-V659, seperating the bass myself. I use the "B" channel L/R speaker-level outputs to the subs for seperation, similar to bi-amping a full-size speaker(I use bookshelfs, based on room dimensions).

When it comes to tracks with good stereo imaging, sounds panning from left-to-right are better accentuated when the bass can travel with the rest of the sound...I first experienced this when I bought my Athena S2/P2 combos...the bass-side of the speaker is seperately powered by design, and when I bought the smaller, more capable, AS-B1's, I got subs for each channel, mimicing the S2/P2 combos, as the S2/P2 were phased out. Running 5 subs was overkill though...so now I'm down to just two...although I did try even just one sub placed behind the seating position, bridging the bass of the rear channels.

:ph34r:I'm one of those "audiophiles:haha:" that measures height, distance, and angle, for calibration, so I'm in the extreme-end of users who looks for such things...but what you offer in the Psyko PC 5.1 Gaming Headphones is more than any other headphone can claim, so while I think the seperation may have a positive effect in overall sound placement, that may not apply to headphones, as noone has ever tried...and there's always room for further projects...:thumb:

All that said though, I have no interest in a 7.1 model...even movies with 7.1 tracks don't really accentuate anything more, really, than a 5.1 track would, but I'll be preordering a set of the current model, and will definately consider any other models you may come up with...

I'd gladly review a set, too, if you wanted to send me one...

I'm with bojangles here, I'm curious what the frequency response on these are, for both, ear location and the actual speaker's and bass speaker.

On another note (feel free to edit this out and ignore if you wish), is there a possibility, as I see there is a "coupon" area in the pre-order page, to give use HWC'ers an exclusive coupon, due to our awesomeness of being a Canadian site? Perhaps you can work it out with the site admins to be done in a way that only a certain amount of unique coupon codes are given out to interested and contributing members of the site? It would ensure its exclusivity to the site. Something like a free shipping coupon, and/or a certain % off could be more than enough to entice members here to pre-order.

Assuming you limit any HWC deal to intrested contrbuting Canadian members only, free shipping + a token amount of % off shouldn't be hard to do. I think its safe to say that most members here LOVE "Made in Canada" products as long as the quality is there.

If I understand correctly your setup is only for a room system. In a room system you can set up a sub for each channel, or groups of channels, but both ears hear every sound, which we believe is critical. I'll give this some more thought about the headphone equivalent.

Yeah, i think it's less important for this situation, given that the sound from each channel is duplicated @ each ear.

But if these cans can emulate my home system, thier a sure-fire winner...and I think they are pretty damn close already, just by design. It's very exciting for me to see this level of innovation...

I'm also with bojangles on this. I generally steer clear of "gaming" headphones, as they are usually priced higher but sound worse than most sets geared for media or audiophiles. That's why I have been sticking to my Dolby Headphone processor. However, you guys have gone a far better route than any other surround headphone I've seen, which try to cram in 6 drivers at the inner cup, which only ends up limiting driver size.

I'd like to know the frequency response and impedance of the drivers. Also, what size are the drivers, and are they all the same size? What are the tubes, or "waveguides" as you call them, made of? Lastly, this seems to be aimed at PC only. While I myself do not play on consoles, there's a big market there these days. Do you have any plans to release a 5.1 DAC via S/PDIF receiver (or HDMI, if it's viable)?
