    Renewables and the environment.

As an electrical engineer in the utility industry, I've had numerous encounters with people talking about just how troublesome inverter-based generation (i.e. renewables, batteries) is on the bulk electric system (transmission). They introduce harmonics and power quality issues, affecting large...

Microsoft takes a step to kill Office '16 and '19

I use Linux daily. Works like a charm. Some compatibility issues, sure, but if everyone gets tired of NOT owning their software, perhaps that will entice developers to transition as well :). We also have to invest/donate to products made for Linux. Not everything can be FOSS.

    Hot Deals!!!!!

For what I use my 4K 144Hz monitor for, it's definitely awesome. Even just from a pure desktop environment perspective, it just makes things feel that much smoother!

how are you blocking ad's and such?

I use Ublock Origin, however that may not be enough once Manifest V3 approaches. Looks like YouTube is the first test of such.

    How fast is coax ?

The speed is limited due to the use of DOCSIS. They are starting to use a fiber backbone but the home runs are still coax.

    How fast is coax ?

We definitely need to know how you're using the Rogers Ignite modem. Do you have the XB6 (Black) or XB7 (White)? The XB6 does not have a 2.5Gbps LAN port, so you will be stuck with 1Gbps limitation. The XB7 has a 2.5Gbps LAN port marked with an orange or red mark above the one port. Are you...

    Completed Steam Deck x86 (Holo)

Are you programming it via Linux or iCUE on Windows? I've had nothing but problems getting my I2CBus connected via OpenRGB on Linux.

    Completed Steam Deck x86 (Holo)

What are you running for RGB control? OpenRGB? Was it able to detect the peripherals and I2CBus correctly?

    Completed Steam Deck x86 (Holo)

If you end up having issues with HoloISO you can always revert to JoeBlow distro and run Steam in Big Picture Mode.

    Completed Steam Deck x86 (Holo)

Looks like it works pretty well in Linux if you ask me. Just make sure you use a distro with a more recent kernel (6.0+). https://www.phoronix.com/review/amd-5800x3d-linux6

    New Media Server.

What are you planning on running on this media server? If you're doing multimedia transcoding, make sure the CPU (if not running dedicated GPU) has codec support for what you need. The 13700 is probably satisfactory. For RAM, you have quite a bit if this is your first run. Another option...

an interesting observation on why Linux isn't the dominant OS

I've been using Linux for 2 years now. It really is quite simple for those that don't stray outside the mainstream desktop environments (GNOME and KDE). There's just too many distros to choose from. There's so many to pick from that it scares newcomers. "Oh but that's what makes Linux great."...

    Might be better than ninite

I never knew there was a GUI client for Chocolatey. That makes it even more attractive because I hate CLI sometimes lol

Synology releases a new 2 bay budget NAS - the DS223j

Unfortunately I'm having a hard time recommending newer Synology NAS's if they will be used as multimedia hubs. The use of the new AMD R1600 results in terrible encode/decode performance, especially for 4K content consumption. I know the DS223j uses a Realtek processor.

what excites you with the new CPU tech / features / functions that are coming?

I'm excited for zero ghosting/overshoot, high refresh rate monitors. ULMB2 and other technologies are getting us that much closer to it. I'm also excited to see where Linux is going. With Valve pushing SteamOS on the Deck, Vulkan and Wine support has received massive improvements. I hope that...

I wonder if Linux is on the cusp of becoming the most popular OS in the world...

I've been using Pop!_OS as my main driving OS for over a year. Just installed Fedora 38 and they've been working great for 95% of the things I do. That being said though, I can't trust WINE to translate tax software. Those numbers MUST be exact, otherwise there's risk of being audited for no...

    Dragon Age: Inquisition

I'm an FPS guy, but I bought DAI to try a different avenue and I think it's an amazing game. I'm doing all the quests in Hinterlands right now, but from the sounds of it, I shouldn't haha. Controls are a bit wonky, like riding on the horses, but overall I like the fluidity of combat and...

PC Games like Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie or Donkey Kong 64

That's what I mean. If I grab a 3DS to play N64 games, doesn't that defeat the purpose of trying new games? Is this genre dead? It didn't last very long... The genre I'm talking about is having a home world, and getting enough bananas/stars/whathaveyou to get to the next world. The only...
