the 'Stuff That's Just Really Interesting 'thread

I get why they do this, but it feels like such a cave to boomers/genx/millenials (with boomers likely the loudest voices of the smokers). Can't risk the baby-soft current smokers having to give up their cigs, so lets just ban it for the kids.

Just ban the damn things and get it over with.
From a cost perspective (particularly in healthcare), I agree with you 100%. From a political perspective, I can understand why they're not willing to go in that direction: seniors vote. It sucks, but politicians primary focus is always on getting re-elected.

all this does is move everyone over to vapes.
Agreed. I think they should just bite the bullet and attach it to all tobacco and nicotine products, too. Vapes, pouches, chew. There's ample evidence for negative health effects from all of them, and negative externalities. Of course, that's also true of alcohol, so I could see a reasonable question of why not that, too--though prohibition certainly proved why it's impossible to ban things that you can make in a bathtub with household ingredients.

The article mentions they are tightening the reigns on vaping too. Like no vaping in a car with children just like no smoking in a car with children here.

According to the CBC coverage this morning Vapes are included in the "generational" restrictions.
